We can ask all the right questions…

…and someone can still walk away feeling unheard.

Because it’s not just about what we say.

It’s about:
• 𝕙𝕠𝕨 𝕡𝕣𝕖𝕤𝕖𝕟𝕥 𝕪𝕠𝕦 𝕒𝕣𝕖
• 𝕙𝕠𝕨 𝕤𝕒𝕗𝕖 𝕚𝕥 𝕗𝕖𝕖𝕝𝕤
• 𝕨𝕙𝕖𝕥𝕙𝕖𝕣 𝕥𝕙𝕖𝕪 𝕗𝕖𝕖𝕝 𝕛𝕦𝕕𝕘𝕖𝕕 𝕠𝕣 𝕦𝕟𝕕𝕖𝕣𝕤𝕥𝕠𝕠𝕕

That’s what helps people open up.

Not technique.
Not scripts.

Many people think it starts with the right question…

It doesn’t. It starts with how safe it feels to be honest.

𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐮𝐩 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠.

𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐮𝐩 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭.

𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 “𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭” 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐞.

Less pressure.
More presence.
More safety.

And that’s where real conversations begin.

I build this into all of my Mental Health First Aid training.

Many people think 𝙈𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙡 𝙃𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙝 𝙁𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝘼𝙞𝙙 is about saying the right thing.

It’s not.

It’s about:
- staying present.
- listening without rushing to fix.
- responding in a way that feels safe.

Because in real life, these moments don’t come with a script.

They happen quickly.
Under pressure.
And how we respond can shape what happens next.

That’s where confidence comes from:
understanding what might sit underneath behaviour.

Not just knowing what to say - but knowing how to show up.

There’s something about days like today that can feel… mixed.

On the surface, it’s a long weekend.
A chance to rest. Reset. Slow down.

But for a lot of people -
𝐢𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭.

⚠️ Because even rest can come with pressure.

Pressure to make the most of it.
Pressure to feel better.
Pressure to switch off… when your mind hasn’t caught up yet.

And the systems we move in don’t pause for a bank holiday.

People still feel what they feel.
Staff still carry what they carry.
Families still move in the same patterns.

𝙎𝙤 𝙢𝙖𝙮𝙗𝙚 𝙩𝙤𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙞𝙨𝙣’𝙩 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙖 𝙗𝙞𝙜 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙩.

Maybe it’s just about 𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙜 where you are - without trying to rush it.

That might be:
* Taking a proper break.
* Doing something small that feels like yours.
* Or just getting through the day without adding extra pressure.

💡 That counts.

If you’re working today - 🅘 🅢🅔🅔 🅨🅞🅤.
If you’re resting but finding it hard - that makes sense too.

A little reminder from a recent Staff Development Day:

You don’t have to fix it.
You should calm it.

When we lower our tone…
When we reduce the demand…
When we shrink the task…

learning & focus comes back online.

Mental health culture in education and beyond isn’t about dramatic interventions.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞?

There’s something humbling about going from “𝙗𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙨𝙪𝙥𝙥𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙨 𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙨”… to being back in the seat of learning again.

Over the past few months, I’ve started training in Systemic Family Practice through my CAMHS role.

And if I’m honest - it’s been both grounding and 🇸 🇹 🇷 🇪 🇹 🇨 🇭 🇮 🇳 🇬.

It’s begun shifting how I see things…

Not just behaviour - but the systems around it.

The patterns.
The roles.
The meaning underneath it all.

One thing that’s really stayed with me:
𝙒𝙚’𝙧𝙚 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙣 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚,
𝙬𝙚’𝙧𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙨𝙮𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙢𝙨.

Still early in the journey. Still learning. Still developing.

But it’s already shaping how I support young people, families, and staff teams through 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠.

“🄲🄰🄻🄼 🄸🅃, 🄳🄾🄽’🅃 🅂🄾🄻🅅🄴 🄸🅃.”

I recently delivered two sessions at The City of Liverpool College Staff Development Day - supporting staff to respond to distress mid-lesson. I was proud and honoured to be invited to be part of the college’s aim to strengthen a whole-system mental health culture.

Not therapy.
Not fixing.
Just calm, containment, and clarity.

Mental health culture in education isn’t built through grand gestures. It’s built through regulated adults in ordinary moments.

If your school or college is planning a staff development day and wants practical, time-efficient strategies that reduce pressure (not add to it) - get in touch.

𝐒𝐘𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐌𝐈𝐂 𝐅𝐀𝐌𝐈𝐋𝐘 𝐏𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐄 | 𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐔𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐑𝐄𝐅𝐋𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒

Now that I’m heading into week 2 of teaching on my Systemic Family Practice course, I’ve been thinking back to induction and the sessions that really stuck with me.

Hearing Lee Weston speak was one of them.

Lee is the Founder of 𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 & 𝐀𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐂𝐈𝐂, and his message was thoughtful & powerful:

✨ Young people don’t need fixing - they need belief and opportunity.

He spoke from lived experience, with honesty & purpose, about what truly helps care-experienced young people feel seen, valued & capable of building their own futures.

• No big speeches • No buzzwords

Just real talk about what it means to stand beside young people rather than above them.

It felt like the perfect message to carry into training that’s all about systems, relationships & the environments around young people.

Really grateful for people doing work that turns hope into something practical.

Thank you, Lee 🙏🏽

𝙋𝙍𝙊𝙁𝙀𝙎𝙎𝙄𝙊𝙉𝘼𝙇 𝘿𝙀𝙑𝙀𝙇𝙊𝙋𝙈𝙀𝙉𝙏 | 𝙎𝙔𝙎𝙏𝙀𝙈𝙄𝘾 𝙁𝘼𝙈𝙄𝙇𝙔 𝙋𝙍𝘼𝘾𝙏𝙄𝘾𝙀

The 2-week induction is done, and it’s already changed how I’m thinking about my work.

Big milestone tomorrow - I officially start the teaching phase of my Systemic Family Practice diploma.

This course (part of the CYP-IAPT programme and AFT accredited) is all about working systemically with young people and families - looking at relationships, patterns, and environments, not just the individual in isolation.

Breaking it down:
It’s about understanding the bigger picture around a young person, and helping families and systems make changes together.

Feeling that mix of:
😬 nerves
⚡ excitement
🧠 ‘okay, this is stretching me’

But also feeling grateful to be doing training that directly feeds back into better support for young people and families.

New learning. Bigger thinking. Same purpose.

😅 𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄.𝐖𝐄.𝐆𝐎.

🌿 DECEMBER CPD | 𝘈𝘭𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘴𝘩 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦

In December we delivered our second-to-last Mental Health & Inclusion CPD sessions with

Across four workshops -
✨ Hot Cross Bun (Understanding Mental Health)
✨ Neurodiversity
✨ Gender Identity Awareness
✨ Children in Care & Trauma

Staff feedback focused on empathy, understanding, safety, strategy, and hope - with many sharing they feel more confident supporting students and knowing where to signpost when things feel tough.

🗣️ Shout out to the college’s wellbeing team, , for their passion & hard-work.

Very grateful to work alongside such reflective staff and an amazing facilitation team.

One final delivery to go next week… 💭

As the year draws to a close, I’ve been reflecting on the people and places that have trusted me with their time, their stories, and their work this year.

To the staff teams, leaders, colleges, children’s homes, and young people I’ve worked alongside - thank you. Your openness, honesty, and willingness to pause and reflect, even in the busiest moments, is never taken for granted.

This work is rarely simple. It asks for patience, curiosity, and care - often when energy is already stretched. It’s been a privilege to walk alongside so many of you in that space this year.

Wishing you a Christmas that gives you what you need - whether that’s rest, connection, quiet, or simply space to breathe.

Thank you for trusting Mindful Matters Training in 2025 🤍
