Calon Heart Screening and Defibrillators UK Charity aims to improve the accessibility and availability of lifesaving defibrillators across the c

ountry, which in turn, will help improve out-of-hospital cardiac arrest outcomes – currently, less than 1 in 10 people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the UK. Since 2012 Calon Heart Screening & Defibrillators UK has been very busy working on the widespread provision of defibrillators across UK and to date, we have placed over 26,000 Defibrillators in communities. In Wales, there are approximately 8,000 sudden cardiac arrests outside the hospital each year. It’s shocking that the survival rate is only 3%. Where an AED or Defibrillator is used, the survival rate can increase to up to 74%.

“Unfortunately, there are not enough defibrillators in the UK or trained people to give victims the best chance of survival during those first few critical minutes. With access to more defibrillators, we can provide a vital link in the chain of survival so that even more lives can be saved throughout the country. When someone suffers a cardiac arrest, their chances of survival drop by up to 14% for every minute that passes, so a speedy response is crucial. Therefore, early defibrillation – within four to five minutes – gives the best possible chance of survival.”

In addition to placing defibrillators and training people in CPR, our heart screening program is a vital part of our work. Our charitable heart screening program has already established the benefit of screening, having identified many people with life-changing and life-limiting cardiac conditions. To date, we have screened over 11,000 people for life-threatening heart conditions. For more info please visit our website at www.calonhearts.org

Now that the summer holidays are in full swing, it's more important than ever to know where your nearest defibrillator is.

Do you know where yours is?

Our Head of Comms and Public Affairs, Lisa, is out and about around the country on her summer holiday, and she couldn't resist stopping to check out one of our defib boxes on the Masonic Hall in Aberaeron.

A defibrillator can be the difference between life and death in those first few minutes after a cardiac arrest, and every second counts. Wherever you're spending your summer, take a moment to spot your nearest one, whether that's on holiday or back home.

Want a defibrillator in your community? We can help. Local halls, clubs, churches and businesses can apply for one through our website, and a simple fundraising event - a coffee morning, a raffle, a sponsored walk - could be all it takes to help cover the cost and bring lifesaving equipment to your area.

More heartbreaking news this week. An inquest has confirmed that Alex Hughes, son of Wales football legend Mark Hughes, died from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS) at just 38. He collapsed at home in June and was found by his own two young sons, who tried CPR before help arrived.

SADS is diagnosed when the cause of death cannot be explained in a post-mortem examination because the structure of the heart appears normal. That is what makes it so frightening: there is no visible warning, and often no history of illness at all.

This is exactly why Calon Hearts exists. Many of the underlying electrical heart conditions linked to SADS can be picked up by a simple, painless ECG screening, the kind we carry out at our community screening events across Wales.

Our work cannot undo a tragedy like this one. But it can give another family the chance this one never had.

Our thoughts are with Alex's wife, sons, and the whole Hughes family.

If you haven't been screened, or you know a young person who hasn't, please don't leave it. Book onto our next screening day or find out more at calonhearts.org/screenings.

We're absolutely thrilled that Calon Hearts has been nominated for a Welsh Charity Award!

The Welsh Charity Awards, organised by WCVA, celebrate the charities, community groups and volunteers making a real difference across Wales. To be nominated alongside so many incredible organisations means so much to our small team.

This recognition belongs to everyone who has supported us along the way - our volunteers, our screening partners, and every single person who has backed our mission to prevent young sudden cardiac deaths through heart screening.

Finalists are announced in September, with winners revealed at the awards ceremony on 15 October 2026 at the Hilton Hotel, Cardiff. Fingers crossed we make the shortlist!

Thank you for being part of the Calon Hearts story. Diolch o galon. ❤️
