DO therapists have therapists?

Yes definitely! If anybody values the opportunity to unfilter, release emotions, get perspective, lighten the load and gain clarity, then counsellors do.

Although therapy comes in different forms. One of the most effective therapists for me, happens to be of the equine variety.

This is Harry …… a wise, highly attuned, authentic being and best of all he’s a super state changer! Whatever I take to him, it somehow feels different when I leave.

And hopefully one day I can combine equine therapy to support humans too, that’s the aspiration!

For mental health week …. The topic of 'self-identity?'

What does it look like to establish and build on your own sense of identity?

Questions may arise along the lines of..

Am I just fitting in, complying and flying under the radar?
Do I prioritise the needs of others at the expense of my own?
How do I define my boundaries, values and principles – am I being taken advantage of, feeling unappreciated, or not being heard?

Do I have resentment towards others, without them having any idea?
Is there a sense of being in pursuit, feeling pressure to perform or prove something that is outside my area of interest?
What are your passions, interests and hobbies?

Am I able to connect, name feelings and emotions daily?
Do I seek external validation at work, at home, with friends?
Do I get uncomfortable when voicing my own views and opinions?

A really nice video exploring this area:

Inner child work is a really compassionate approach I tend to introduce for those who recognise they want to engage and heal at a deeper level.

Re-parenting a younger part of us is a process, as is evolving from 'unmet needs' usually due to lack of support, connection and guidance around adverse experiences in our earlier years. A time when we were too young to express or articulate how we felt, it became stuck, hence the triggers in adulthood.

When trauma is triggered, the mind can enter a state known as age regression, where you emotionally respond as the younger version of yourself who first experienced the pain. In these moments, your reactions may feel overwhelming because they are rooted in past wounds rather than the present situation. It can seem confusing, as your current self is replaced by the feelings and coping mechanisms of that earlier age. Understanding age regression helps you recognize that these responses are not weaknesses, but signals from unresolved experiences. With awareness and compassion, you can begin to support that younger self and respond from your present strength.

Trigger warning - sexual abuse:

Around 1 in 6 girls are sexually abused by the age of 16, the number of boys abused is also shockingly high. And unfortunately due to the taboo nature of the issue, along with the unpalatable/uncomfortable nature of the subject it is rarely discussed in the mainstream news/social media. This leaves a large proportion of society stuck with the trauma and impact of this experience, having to keep it secret whilst trying to manage as an adult with the legacy it has left on the mind and body.

I have been a sessional counsellor for an sexual abuse charity and also in my own private practice for a number of years to support and collaborate with people to re build and heal from the impact of this type of abuse - generally known as complex PTSD and PTSD.
