Phew! So you’ve gotten over the first trimester where everything was….. just a lil crazy.

The second trimester is where you may feel your energy return. You start to have that “pregnancy glow”. It’s an exciting trimester as this is where you can find out if you’re having a boy or a girl. Things start to feel real.

Your body is continually adapting and growing. Your bump will be getting more obvious and your centre of gravity continues to shift. Your baby is really starting to “pack on the pounds” and who can forget those first flutters you feel as they start moving and exploring their environment.

Life is pretty cool, isn’t it?

Why would you choose chiropractic care for you and your family?

Simple answer is that you just feel great after getting adjusted and who doesn’t want to feel great?

The long answer is another question - do you want to thrive or survive?

If your nervous system is dysregulated, all kinds of things happen ranging from pain and chronic inflammation to poor sleep, low mood, headaches, fatigue etc. And who wants to live life like that??

Chiropractic helps bring a dysregulated nervous system and body back into a state of ease. It brings order back to where there was chaos and disruption. As a chiropractor, I work with your body and nervous system to get you back to into a thriving state.

When your nervous system is well regulated you heal faster, move better, sleep better, have more stable moods and life is just A LOT easier.

In my mind, who wouldn’t want that? 🥳

A baby’s tongue and how easily it can move has a huge impact on how successful breastfeeding is.

If the tongue is tight or if there is a tongue tie, it will change how the tongue moves and therefore, the baby will find it harder to breastfeed. And it will be more uncomfortable for mum. There’s a whole host of issues that go along with not being able to feed properly - a “colicky” baby is one of the most common. If baby isn’t feeding and/or latching well then it can also affect mum’s milk supply and it’s just a vicious cycle. Thanks Mum guilt…..

Luckily, there is something you can do. If you have a baby that is a fussy feeder, drop me a message and let’s see what we can do.

Saccharomyces boulardii.

It’s an amazing little microbe that inhabits your gut. It’s technically a yeast and is one of those little microbes you want in your gut if you’ve ever had antiobiotics. It’s resistant to antibiotics so it’s crucial for helping to support the gut and microbiome during and after a course of antibiotics.

What does it do? It’s been shown to help with antiobiotic associated diarrhea, help with IBS, helps with anxiety and depression, helps keep the integrity of the gut lining, boots the immune system, helps with digestion and nutrient absorption…. The list goes on. It can actually withstand the acidic environment in the stomach so it makes it to the colon!

And it’s super easy to take! I make my own S. boulardii fizzy apple juice! And the best bit? Patrick LOVES it and always asks for “yummy fizzy juice”. It’s the kind of fizzy juice I approve of.

Whenever you’re making fermented foods, always pop your glass containers in the oven at 100•C for 15 minutes to sterilise them. Let them cool down.

To start the fizzy apple juice, take a litre of cloudy apple juice (yes, it has to be cloudy!), open a capsule of S Boulardii and sprinkle it in the juice. Close the lid and shake well to mix. Then put it in a cupboard for 24 hours and viola! Fizzy juice. You can make subsequent batches from the dregs of your current fizzy juice. Keep it in the fridge or you will end up with something like apple cider vinegar!

As with all fermented foods, always starts with a small amount and gradually increase it 😊.

Everything in your body is connected. You can’t work on one system and it not have flow on effects into other systems.

For example, you break your little toe. It’s not just your toe that has to adapt. The other side of your body has to take extra load, your posture changes, the way you move changes. Your hips are squint to take the weight off the broken toe, which then changes the tension in your shoulders (they may slope more way than the other) which causes your neck and head to compensate as well. And all because you broke your little toe.

The same applies to the nervous system. People come in to see me because of, say lower back pain. But what is the lower back connected to? Everything else. So is it a lower back problem or is it coming from somewhere else and the lower back is the warning light on the dashboard flashing to get your attention? 🤔

It’s Tongue Tuesday Time 😁

We all know that our tongue is important for chewing, speaking, for experiencing taste, swallowing and breathing. But did you know that poor tongue function can impact your cardiovascular health? 🤯

No, I’m not off my rocker. It has to do with your tongue posture while you sleep. If you’re a mouth breather or you snore or both (ie poor tongue function and posture), then, then your risk for cardiovascular issues is higher. Mouth breathing or snoring reduces night time oxygenation of your blood which activates your sympathetic nervous system. This over a long period of time…..doesn’t sound so good, does it?

Can’t do the movements or hold the positions or they feel uncomfortable? You may have a tongue tie or a tight tongue or both. Luckily, there is a lot you can do!

Stay tuned for more.

Fermented foods.

They’re SOOO good for us and yet they are sadly lacking from our diets now. Things like sauerkraut, kimchi and kefir are more well known but have you heard of Beet Kvass?

I’ve been drinking this every day for about a month and now I don’t know where I’d be without it! I have it first thing in the morning before food.

Beet kvass is super simpler to make and has so many health benefits:
- supports liver detoxification
- great for anyone with gallbladder issues
- supports the production of healthy red blood cells
- improves your immune system
- is fantastic for your gut and microbiome
- helps with allergies
- improves brain fog
- reduces inflammation
- shall I continue? 😂

It’s really easy peasy to make. I use a 2.5L mason jar but I’ll give you the recipe based on 1L.

- 1-2 medium organic beets
- 1 tbspn salt
- roughly 1L of filtered (or boiled and cools) water.

Chop the beets up with the skin on. The smaller you cut them, the quicker the ferment. Put them in the jar and sprinkle the salt in. Fill with water. Leave a bit of space at the top for bubbles. Put the lid on then shake vigorously to dissolve the salt. Put in a cupboard for 3-21 days and voila!

Start drinking small amounts and gradually build as this is potent stuff!

The human body never ceases to amaze me and the changes that happen during pregnancy just blow my mind.

Did you know that by week 10, the basic structures of the brain and spinal cord have been established? Nerves are already making connections to allow finger flexion and toe curling!

Pretty cool, right?

Did you know that men and women generally show stress differently?

Let’s take an example of a couple having an argument. The more heated the argument, the more the woman wants to talk. The more heated the argument, the more the man wants to walk away. Sound familiar? Both are in high levels of stress.

Fight or Flight is more of a man’s response to stress and it was only recently that we discovered that a woman’s response to stress is different. Women will Tend and Befriend. What does that mean? It means we just want to talk (and we’re not looking for a solution gentlemen!) or we tend to our environment…. Yes the tops of the kitchen cabinets have to be cleaned NOW. Ladies, you know what I’m talking about! 🤣

What's your stress response go-to?

Did you know that your tongue is one of the most neurologically connected muscles in the body?

It gives information to your brain about taste, texture, temperature, touch, posture and movement. This is one reason why babies put EVERYTHING in their mouth and also why it’s SO important to let them do it! All that information going into the mouth is one of the BIGGEST inputs into brain for growth.

How cool are our bodies?
