"Itawari" (労り) is a Japanese word for compassion and thoughtful care, especially for someone going through a difficult time.

It reminds us that caring doesn't always mean finding a solution or knowing exactly what to say. Sometimes it's something much quieter: noticing, staying close, and making sure someone doesn't have to face a difficult moment alone. 🇯🇵

Obon in Japan 🇯🇵

Every August, one of Japan's most meaningful traditions brings families together to remember those who came before them.

Obon (お盆) is a centuries-old Buddhist-influenced tradition based on the belief that the spirits of ancestors return to visit their families during this special period. Across much of Japan, Obon is observed around 13–16 August, although the dates and customs vary between regions.

Families may return to their hometowns, visit and clean ancestral graves, leave offerings, light lanterns and gather with relatives. Lanterns have a particularly beautiful symbolism: their light can be used to welcome ancestral spirits and, at the end of Obon, to guide them on their journey back. In some communities, floating lantern ceremonies known as *toro nagashi* create unforgettable scenes as lights drift quietly across the water.

Obon isn't simply about mourning. It's also about family, gratitude and maintaining a connection between generations — remembering the people whose lives came before our own.

For a few summer days each year, the past feels just a little closer. 🏮🇯🇵
