Children rarely understand the full story of what’s happening around them.

But they feel the atmosphere.

The tension in a room.
The silence after arguments.
The change in someone’s tone.

Over time many children become highly attuned to emotional shifts in their environment.

This can look like maturity.

But often it’s a nervous system learning to stay alert.

If you grew up scanning rooms to work out how everyone else felt, you’re not alone.

Many adults were not taught to trust their emotional world.

They were taught to:
- minimise it
- question it
-explain it away
- or feel guilty for it.

So eventually, self-doubt becomes automatic.

Not because they are weak.

Because somewhere along the way, trusting themselves stopped feeling safe.

Before children talk about trauma, attachment or family stress, they often communicate safety through behaviour.

Where they sit.
What they touch.
Whether they explore the room.

These moments are easy to overlook, but they can reveal how a child is experiencing the therapeutic relationship.

Safety often shows itself quietly.

And when safety grows, the work deepens.

Therapy can be incredibly rewarding… but also surprisingly isolating sometimes.

You can spend all day holding space for other people and still rarely get chance to sit with people who genuinely get the realities of this work.

So, if you’re a therapist local to Cheshire and fancy connecting with other therapists over coffee, I’ve added a Therapists Coffee & Connection meet-up to the website ☕️

I wanted this to feel a little different from some of the more unstructured coffee meet-ups where everyone politely chats for ten minutes and secretly wonders what on earth to say next 😅

So each meet-up will have a gentle theme or discussion prompt to help conversations flow naturally. Nothing formal. Not a workshop. Just enough structure to make it feel easier to settle in, chat and connect.

Our first theme:

The bits nobody tells you about private practice.

The awkward bits. The expensive mistakes. The surprises. The moments where you think… why did nobody warn me about this?!

📍 Lymm, Cheshire
🗓 Sunday 28th June
☕ Small, relaxed group

Spaces are intentionally limited to keep it comfortable and conversational.

Would honestly be really lovely to connect and see some therapist faces in real life 🤍

Being the “easy child” often came at a cost.

The child who:
- didn’t ask for much
- kept the peace
- didn’t make things harder
- adapted quickly
- stayed quiet
- often learnt something very early:

My needs make life harder for other people.

So adulthood can quietly become a repetition of that lesson.

Over-functioning.
Over-giving.
Over-explaining.
Being understanding.
Being low maintenance.

Whilst quietly wondering why relationships still feel exhausting.

Sometimes healing begins by asking:

What parts of me had to disappear to feel loved?

One of the most common things adults say in therapy is:

“I knew something felt off… but I ignored it.”

Not because they are naive.

Because many people learnt to mistrust themselves.

Especially if they grew up around:
- inconsistency
- emotional unpredictability
- criticism
- guilt
people whose needs mattered more than theirs.

So now, even when their nervous system signals: this doesn’t feel good
they override it.

Sometimes healing begins by becoming curious about what your body has been trying to say all along.

Children are deeply loyal to their caregivers.

Even when something hurts them, they often minimise it, excuse it or keep it quiet.

Not because it didn’t matter.

Because protecting the relationship can feel more important than telling the truth.

Understanding this dynamic can change how we listen when children speak about difficult experiences.

Children who mask heavily often struggle to access or express different emotional states directly.

Especially children who are:
• highly adaptive
• anxious
• neurodivergent
• hypervigilant
• or emotionally parentified.

Symbolic tools can create just enough distance for something more authentic to emerge safely.

And often, what becomes important is not: getting the “right” interpretation
but noticing:
• what gets protected
• what gets hidden
• what feels acceptable
• and what the child allows another person to see.
