Your connective tissues (so anything other than muscles (ie tendons, ligaments, fascia)) need slow and steady stress to become and stay strong as you age.
These connective tissues 'shrink-wrap' around habitual posture patterns. In Yin yoga you move your bones into shapes that you don't often hold in your daily life, and by relaxing and softening into these shapes, the deep tissues are targeted with gentle, deep, stress and lengthening.
Slow, sustained loading of these tissues, lengthens them more effectively than a quick stretch.
Also, if you are stressed you can forget how to relax. Yin yoga is like a reset for you as there is so much focus on consciously relaxing your muscles.
