Thanks so much to the gorgeous Flo & her mama for this lovely Google review. I think it pretty much sums up & highlights how and why I do truly absolutely love my job. I feel so lucky to do what I do, and my heart is full when I get to work with people & furries like these 💓 ✨

“I honestly couldn’t recommend Lily enough! 🐾 Flo absolutely loves her sessions and gets so excited for her time with her. She’s incredibly patient, caring and always adapts things to suit Flo (and me! 😂), even when I have to suddenly jump on a work call.
She’s brilliant at what she does, but it’s the little things that make such a difference. Flo is always so happy and relaxed with her, and I know she’s in the best hands. Plus, I wouldn’t want to miss our gossip sessions either! 😂❤️
Wouldn’t trust anyone else with my girl!”

(Featuring Flo, and also her equally beautiful sister Olive, who I also now treat. If it’s Olive’s turn, sometimes Flo will try and take her place 😂. As you can imagine I don’t cope very well with the cuteness overload of seeing the two of them together! 🙈)

Happy relaxing Friday from regulars Betty & Ollie! 🩷💙
(I’m sooo behind on sharing posts of your beautiful furries!)

Betty is at the incredible age of 16 and Ollie is 11. They both have monthly physio for pain management and general age related support to keep them as comfortable & mobile as possible so they can keep enjoying their walkies and remain independent 💪

They are sensitive souls and respond particularly well to LASER & gentle hands on release techniques to ease restrictions, little by little, without asking the body of too much change 🙏

Beautifully written 💜 and links so well into my integrative fascial diploma I’m currently in the middle of; touch (& therefore energy!) is our most valuable tool as therapists 🙏 🐶 🐴

⚡ It’s all just energy ⚡

Every week, a new gadget for treating horses appears. They move through trends, everyone talks about them for a while, and then suddenly, they fade into the background.

At their core, though, they all work with energy at different frequencies.

Take light, for example. On one end of the spectrum, we have infrared; on the other, ultraviolet, both used therapeutically in different ways. In between lies the full range of visible light. Different frequencies, different effects. Most of us know how good it feels to stand in natural sunlight and feel it on our skin.

Now consider sound. We’re familiar with ultrasound, used for both imaging and therapy. But what about music? What happens when you don’t just hear it, but feel it? Why can certain sounds shift your mood, calm your mind, or lift your energy?

Then think about all the machines and devices out there. Are they magic? No. They emit energy at specific frequencies and often come with a hefty price tag.

Want to know something else that emits energy, for free?

Your body.

This is why hands-on therapy has existed for thousands of years. Perhaps it’s not always about the amount of force applied. Maybe there’s something more in the connection, the intention, the communication, and the exchange that occurs between two living systems.

And what better way to influence a body than with something as natural and finely tuned as another living being?

At the same time, it’s worth asking whether we sometimes get caught up chasing the next new thing instead of investing in what we already have. It’s easy to buy another gadget, another tool, another promise of a quick fix. But how often do we slow down, place our hands on our horses, and truly spend time with them? Feeling, observing, listening. Building that connection. Because no device can replace the awareness, sensitivity, and relationship that come from simply being present.

This isn’t to say that gadgets don’t have their place, but rather to question the idea that healing only comes from a machine.

But perhaps the bigger question is this:

If we accept that light can influence the body, and sound can influence the body, is it really so strange to consider that touch might influence the body in ways we’re still trying to understand?

And maybe it’s also a reminder that we shouldn’t rely solely on external fixes when we already carry something powerful within us.

A pivotal moment in the veterinary profession
🥳

DEFRA has published a white paper “Our vision for a thriving veterinary sector”.

Key take aways for us vet physios… 🐾

Autonomy in our practice within a our defined professional scope 💪

Establishing professional licensing to allow greater certainty to vets & animal owners 📋

Protection of our titles 🙅‍♀️

Exciting times ahead 👩‍⚕️ 🙌

There has been a significant milestone for Veterinary Physiotherapy today.

Earlier today, DEFRA published “Our vision for a thriving veterinary sector” – proposals for the biggest reform of veterinary regulation since 1966. Veterinary Physiotherapists are named explicitly within the plans, alongside veterinary surgeons, veterinary nurses and other allied veterinary professionals, as part of a new statutory licence to practise framework.

This is a direct response to the consultation NAVP, and our colleagues at other representative bodies, submitted evidence to earlier this year. It reflects years of work across our profession to build the standards, governance and clinical rigour that regulation demands.

There is more detail to follow, and more work ahead as the framework takes shape. NAVP will be engaging closely with RAMP, AHPR, DEFRA and the new regulator throughout this process, and we will keep our members informed at every stage.

For now, this is a moment to recognise how far Veterinary Physiotherapy has come, and how much further we can go with the statutory recognition our members’ training has always deserved.

Had an amazing time on my practical days as I continue working through my Diploma in Integrated Fascial Therapy 🕸️🤓
Huge thank you to my fantastic tutors for their generosity with their time, knowledge & energy, and to my lovely group where we have been bouncing ideas off & supporting each other 💖

Some new tools and techniques which I’m excited to add to my collection -

Fascial edge tool - essentially an extension of my own hands, but the gentle rounded contact allows for a great fit, and glide through the tissues, aiding the release of myofascial restrictions, fibrosis and trapped mechanoreceptors, which in turn provides pain relief, reduced pain & inflammation, and improved tissue organisation.

Tuning Fork - creates micro level oscillations which can aid in releasing fascial tension, tissue rehydration and reorganisation, and reduction of pain & inflammation. This occurs via various mechanisms, including production of heat (+ circulation), alteration of piezo electric energy which affects state of the ground substance of fascia, and stimulation of endocannabinoids, all via mechanical vibration.

Reflex Recoil - a non invasive flicking technique sending vibration through the tissue which stimulates the body to release tension. It works via stimulating various types of mechanoreceptors, and overall improves circulation, proprioception, and helps the body to recognise where tension is being held.

Kinesiology tape - becoming increasingly popular in the canine world, this can assist with fascial dysfunction, proprioception, pain & inflammation, lymph & blood flow, misalignment & instability. The tape lifts the fur & skin which can decompress the fascia and ease pain by removing pressure from nociceptors. Via proprioceptive stimulation it can activate muscles that are not functioning correctly.

My hands will always be my most valuable tool, but super exciting to have a wider range of options moving forwards 🙌

Sharing some feedback I received on a recent assignment from my diploma in Integrative Fascial Therapy💡 🧠

“This is a very strong and detailed fascial techniques quick reference table, showing excellent understanding of assessment, tissue response, clinical reasoning and the importance of working with the whole animal rather than isolated areas of dysfunction.

You have included a really thoughtful range of assessment considerations, including posture, asymmetry, weight loading, movement patterns, coat and fur changes, breathing, tissue texture, restriction, range of motion and behavioural responses.

… linking these observations to fascial continuity, mechanoreceptors, proprioception, nociception, autonomic regulation and the wider nervous system.

… your section on practitioner state of mind and intent shows a really mature understanding that fascial work is not just about technique, but about presence, awareness, patience, softness and the ability to listen to the animal and the tissues - Awesome

Your reflections around staying calm, avoiding rushing, reducing “noise in the system” and allowing the patient to guide the session are excellent and very relevant to this level of study.

Your direct and indirect myofascial release sections are also well considered, especially your awareness that less pressure can often provide clearer information and that tissue response should guide treatment rather than forcing a predetermined outcome.

This is a highly thoughtful, evidence-aware and clinically relevant piece of work showing strong integration of fascia theory, nervous system understanding and reflective practice. Well done”

….

I feel I have learnt tonnes from this amazing course already and developed both personally and professionally as a practitioner.
Super excited for the next set of practical days and more learning!🤓

Next weekend we delve into unit 3 including some exciting new hands on techniques, plus some tools including use of kinesio tape, 🏃‍♀️ fascial edge tool & tuning forks, and further discussion of use of remedial exercise & red light therapy 🏋️‍♀️ 💥
