Nexplanon implants are now certified for 5 years instead of 3.
Nexplanon, the contraceptive implant, is now licensed for up to five years of contraceptive use in the UK, extending the previous three-year licence.
This means that people who already have a Nexplanon implant can generally continue to rely on it for contraception for up to five years from the date it was inserted, rather than having it routinely replaced after three years.
The change is supported by evidence showing that the implant remains highly effective during the fourth and fifth years of use, providing an important benefit by reducing the number of replacement appointments and procedures needed.
The NHS confirms that the contraceptive implant is over 99% effective when used correctly and replaced at the recommended time. For further information please see links below:
