❤️ A Cause Very Close to the Heart ❤️

Here at S. Wellens we are honoured to be supporting a truly wonderful fundraiser for the NICU units at Royal Oldham Hospital and St Mary’s Hospital.

Little Oscar was born prematurely on 8th July 2025 and spent the first 111 days of his life in neonatal intensive care between these two hospitals. The incredible staff helped save his life and supported the family through an unimaginably difficult time.

Now, his family are hoping to give something back and support other families currently going through the same journey.

We are proud to announce that our funeral homes will be acting as an official drop-off point for donations ❤️

The fundraiser is collecting both monetary and physical donations to help provide items such as:

🧸 Sensory toys
🧺 Blankets
👕 Baby clothing
🪑 Chairs and comfort items for parents
🏥 Medical and support equipment for the units

No donation is too small, every single contribution will help make a difference to babies and families receiving care on these amazing neonatal units.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jean Gill, formerly of Oldham Road Middleton who passed away peacefully at Lyndhurst Care Home on 18th April aged 97, surrounded by her loving family. ❤️

Jean was a much loved mum, grandma, great grandma, family member and friend who touched the lives of so many with her kindness, warmth and wonderful spirit.

She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her, but her memory will live on in the hearts of everyone she leaves behind.

A service to celebrate Jean’s life will be held at Boarshaw Cemetery on Tuesday 19th May at 1pm. All family and friends are warmly welcome to attend and pay their respects.

Family flowers only please, however donations in Jean’s memory would be gratefully received for the Rainbow Trust.

💙 In Loving Memory of Peter Middleton 💙

18th November 1965 – 6th April 2026

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Middleton, a much loved family man and friend, who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Peter’s funeral service will take place on Thursday 7th May at 1:00pm at Blackley Crematorium (Main Chapel).

Peter was a proud Manchester City supporter, and in keeping with this the family kindly ask that guests avoid wearing red...

We think Peter would have had something to say about that! 💙

Instead, you’re very welcome to wear a touch of blue or anything City related if you wish, though this is entirely optional. Your presence is what truly matters ❤️

Family and friends are warmly invited to attend and celebrate Peter’s life, sharing memories and paying their respects.

St George’s Day isn’t only about flags or celebration it’s about remembering the values that bind us, compassion, resilience, and looking out for one another.

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of John Anthony White who left us on 9th April 2026, peacefully surrounded by his loved ones ❤️

John was a devoted husband to Mandy, a proud and loving dad to Melanie, Lynette, John and James, and a much loved grandad. He meant so much to so many, and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A celebration of John’s life will take place at Hollinwood Crematorium on 29th April 2026 at 1pm. Everyone is welcome to attend. In keeping with John’s spirit, denim can be worn if you wish.

After the service, please join us at The Streetbridge to continue sharing memories and celebrating John’s life together.

👹 The Mystery of the “Devil’s Door” in Churches 🚪

Have you ever noticed a small, often sealed doorway on the side of an old church and wondered what it was for? These are sometimes known as “Devil’s Doors” and their story is as fascinating as it is eerie…

Dating back to medieval times many churches across England were built with a special door on the north side traditionally associated with darkness, cold and in folklore the dwelling place of evil.

During baptisms this door would be opened to symbolically allow any evil spirits to escape as the child was welcomed into the Christian faith. Once the ceremony was complete the door would be firmly shut again a powerful gesture of protection and spiritual cleansing.

In some traditions, it was also believed that the Devil himself could enter or leave through this door which is why many of them were later bricked up or permanently sealed.

Today, these doors stand as a quiet reminder of a time when the physical and spiritual worlds were thought to be closely intertwined, where architecture itself played a role in faith, fear, and belief.

Next time you visit an old church, take a moment to look along the walls… you might just spot a “Devil’s Door” and glimpse a piece of history that once held deep symbolic meaning.

✨ The History and Purpose of the Chapel of Rest ✨

The Chapel of Rest is a place many people have heard of, but not everyone fully understands. For generations it has quietly played an important role in saying goodbye to those we love ❤️

Historically, before funeral homes as we know them today existed loved ones were often cared for at home. Families would sit with the deceased paying their respects in familiar surroundings.

As society changed and funeral services became more specialised the Chapel of Rest became a dedicated, peaceful space where this important time could still take place.

Today, the Chapel of Rest offers a calm, private environment where family and friends can spend time with their loved one before the funeral. It allows moments of reflection, conversation and connection whether that’s sitting quietly, holding a hand, or simply being present.

There is no “right” or “wrong” way to say goodbye. For some, visiting the Chapel of Rest brings comfort and a sense of closeness. For others, their final memories are held elsewhere.

What matters most is that each person is given the choice to grieve in a way that feels right for them.

At the heart of everything, the Chapel of Rest is about dignity, respect, and giving families the time and space they need during one of life’s most difficult moments.

Today our funeral Director Anthony and funeral arranger Sharron had the pleasure of delivering our Easter egg donations to the wonderful Lighthouse Project in Middleton 🐣💛

We were met with such a warm welcome, and it was truly heartening to see first hand the incredible work they do within our local community supporting individuals and families who need it most. ❤️

The Lighthouse Project is a vital hub, offering help, hope, and opportunities to so many people right on our doorstep.

A huge thank you to everyone who donated towards our Easter appeal your kindness will help bring a little bit of joy this Easter 🐰🍫

We’re proud to support such an amazing organisation and to play a small part in the fantastic work they do.
