Many people with ADHD become experts at masking their struggles, so much so that they may not even realise they’re doing it at all and the cost of masking can be huge, leading to chronic stress, burnout, low self-esteem or depression.
For many people, especially women and those with inattentive ADHD, masking can lead to being completely overlooked, dismissed or receiving a late diagnosis, if they receive a diagnosis at all.
When people think of ADHD, many picture hyperactivity. But it can also look like people-pleasing, avoiding tasks, abandoned hobbies, messiness, disorganisation and paralysing overwhelm.
Its important to add that of course ADHD looks different for everyone, and not everyone will relate to these experiences.
But ultimately, someone can have it all together but need to work incredibly hard internally, much more than is ever seen, to maintain that 🩷
