If autumn social events feel more draining than joyful, you are not doing community wrong.

Crowds, noise, costumes, alcohol, unfamiliar people and pressure to look as though you are having fun can be a lot—especially if you are anxious, neurodivergent, sober or unsure how safe a space will feel.

A small plan can help:

• decide how long you want to stay
• arrange your journey home
• identify one person you can check in with
• take sensory breaks
• give yourself permission to leave

You do not have to push past every limit to prove that you belong.

A hate incident does not have to leave a physical injury to affect your mental health.

Being threatened, followed, deliberately misgendered, targeted online or made to feel unsafe can lead to shock, anger, fear, poor sleep or replaying what happened afterwards.

You get to decide what feels safest next. That might include:

• writing down what happened
• saving screenshots
• telling somebody you trust
• asking for practical support
• reporting through the police or a third-party reporting centre
• choosing not to report right now

Not reporting does not make what happened less real.

Manchester City Council lists reporting routes and support:

Call 999 if there is an immediate danger.

What helps you feel safer again after an upsetting encounter?

Today is Inters*x Awareness Day.

Inters*x people are born with s*x characteristics that do not fit typical definitions of male or female bodies. Being inters*x is not the same as having a particular gender identity or s*xual orientation.

Good allyship means listening to inters*x-led organisations, respecting privacy and bodily autonomy, and challenging the idea that every body must fit a binary.

Inters*x people deserve accurate information, community and mental health support that does not pathologise who they are.

Ace Week begins today.

As*xual and aromantic people are often told they will change their mind, have not met the right person or need to be “fixed”. Those messages can create shame and make it harder to ask for support.

There is no single ace or aro experience. Some people want romantic relationships, some do not. Some have s*x, some do not. Some use several labels, and some prefer none.

Support should be curious without being intrusive—and should never treat a person’s identity as a symptom.

Happy Ace Week to our ace, aro and questioning community.

One trusted adult can make a real difference.

A University of Manchester project found that mentoring for LGBTQIA+ young people aged 13+ helped improve wellbeing and confidence and reduce isolation.

That does not mean one relationship can remove every pressure. It does show why consistent, affirming connection matters—especially when a young person may be navigating bullying, rejection or uncertainty elsewhere.

Support can begin with listening, believing somebody, using the language they choose and not rushing them to explain or disclose more than feels safe.
