I've been reflecting recently on the profound importance of co-regulation.
Our nervous systems are exquisitely intelligent. Long before we process words, our bodies are constantly sensing the environment, asking one simple question:
"Am I safe?"
Co-regulation is happening all the time.
Whether we're with our partner, our children, our friends, our clients or complete strangers, our nervous systems are constantly influencing one another. A child doesn't simply respond to a parent's words, they respond to the parent's nervous system. The same is true in our relationships, workplaces and healing spaces.
Our presence really does matter.
The level of safety another person feels, and therefore their capacity to move towards connection, healing and restoration, is influenced by the quality of the space we hold and embody.
This is why our own inner work is so important.
The nervous system doesn't only respond to what we say.
It responds to the state we embody.
People may not remember every word we say, but their nervous system often remembers how it felt to be with us.
Holding safe space is an art that develops through self-awareness, practice and lived experience.
Ongoing self-work isn't about perfection. It's about integrity.
Whether you're a therapist, coach, yoga teacher, healer, parent, partner, leader or simply someone wanting to feel more at home in your own body, learning to regulate your own nervous system is one of the greatest gifts you can offer yourself, and, in turn, those around you.
