Myth busting tiiiiiime - choosing to birth at home isn’t some whimsical, incense-burning, crystal-charged, off-the-grid fantasy. It’s actually one of the most logical, evidence-based decisions you can make.

And yet, people still act like home birth is some fringe idea, reserved for barefoot free spirits who chant their babies out under the full moon. 🌕 (Spoiler: it’s not.)

Here’s why home birth makes total sense - not just emotionally, but scientifically:

🧠 Fewer Interventions = Less risk – Research shows that planned home births for low-risk pregnancies have fewer interventions, lower rates of C-sections, and less chance of assisted delivery. Because surprise, surprise - when you’re undisturbed, your body actually works!

🏡 You’re more likely to feel safe and relaxed – And what happens when you feel safe? Your oxytocin flows, your contractions are effective, and your birth progresses smoothly.

💉 Lower risk of infection – Hospitals are full of, well… hospital germs. At home, you’re not exposed to a revolving door of bacteria and viruses.

👩‍⚕️ You STILL can access medical support – Home birth midwives are highly skilled in physiological birth AND trained to handle complications.

🚑 Transfer isn’t failure – If you do need to go to hospital, you go. Simple. It’s called having options, and that’s what true safety looks like - birth on YOUR terms, with support that adapts to your needs.

The real question isn’t “Why would you have a home birth?” but “Why wouldn’t you—if you’re low-risk, informed, and want the best chance of an undisturbed, physiological birth?”

So no, home birth isn’t hippy sh*t. It’s science. It’s logic. It’s just birth in its most natural, powerful, and undisturbed form.

Like most things, birth isn’t black and white.

In a world where politics, hierarchy, and power structures shape the minutiae of daily life — why would birth be any different?

It’s not anti-system. It’s not anti-midwife. Although when we speak out, we get these labels. Make us look reckless, in order to discredit what we’re saying maybe.

Just like we must talk about gender equality or racial bias, we must explore what’s really at play when it comes to our bodies, our babies, and the systems that hold them.

It’s reclamation. And it starts with you.

In a world where the noise about the maternity system is loud… choose power.

Regardless of how you birth your baby, the choices you make should never be because you feel like no isn’t an option, because you’ve been scared around the ‘what-ifs’ or because you’re grappling with a system that has been designed for the masses.

You’re not being difficult, asking too much or being unsafe by understanding the landscape of what is being offered to you, using critical thought and finding the option that works best for you.

There’s something sacred about the stories I get to witness.

The quiet bravery. The steady rising. The moment she begins to trust herself again.

🌿So much of the joy is in the preparation…
🌿Not to shield her from what may happen on the day…
🌿But to help her rise, no matter what does.

This work isn’t about controlling birth or the people in it.

It’s about anchoring deep into power, into presence, and into possibility.

And that? That changes everything.

Let’s talk about sweeps.

The “gentle nudge” that’s often offered at the end of pregnancy - often framed as harmless or routine - but actually is a vaginal procedure that can bring on contractions, cause bleeding, or disrupt your body’s own hormonal flow.

Sweeps aren’t evil. But they’re not magic either. The key is informed consent, not default acceptance.

💡 If you want to understand the evidence before deciding. Here’s some helpful resource:

book In Your Own Time and search ‘stretch and sweep’ on her website to find lots of helpful info.
rachel.reed has a great post on Induction: a step by step guide on her website, her book Reclaiming Childbirth As. A Rote of Paaage is a MUST read for anyone who is pregnant.

And, of course, the My Pocket Doula App® - download and get a free 7 day trial.

Because knowing the facts means you stay in charge - not the system.

⛔️ R i s k

In the current maternity climate, it’s simply not enough to be able to look through the lens of ‘right’ and ‘not right’.

Being able to look at things with a critical and curious mind isn’t about ‘Google becoming your doctor’ - it’s about being able to look at a system that is flawed, could be massively improved and is fraught with challenges which impact human beings every day.

The more we can understand that everyone holds an element of bias, and this bias impacts the way they approach what they do, the more we can push for personalised recommendations and support.

The first step to a powerful birth experience is realising not one single person has all the answers, and you have the power to navigate your rite of passage on your terms.

👀 listen…

Sometimes I work with people and they choose to do the complete opposite thing that I’d choose for myself.

The magic of it all? IT’S NOT ABOUT ME.

As a doula, a fundamental part of the care that we offer is non-judgemental. That we support all experiences and don’t try and encourage you to do what WE’D do.

So regardless of whether it’s your sister, mum, auntie Brenda, consultant, midwife…. It doesn’t matter ‘what they’d do’ because it’s not their body, pregnancy, baby or birth.

I love helping you step into that all powerful being that you are. It’s not about what anyone else would choose.

Does that mean I just standby whilst people are being coerced? Absolutely not! I’ll always challenge the people I work with to think about things in a different way, send them resources and information to help them decide what is best for them.

But never, ever to tell them what they should do. Because the only person that knows what is best for you and your baby is YOU.

You can’t out-achieve birth.
You can’t research your way past surrender.
And no amount of “getting it right” will make your body feel safe if your mind is still chasing gold stars.

If you’ve spent your whole life performing, achieving, perfecting — pregnancy can feel deeply unsettling. Suddenly, the rules change. Control stops working.

But here’s the reframe: there’s no “right” way to do this. There’s only your way. The version where you feel supported, informed and powerful — whether that’s water, epidural, home, or hospital.

The work isn’t to perfect the process. It’s to trust it.

🌶️ s p i c y

Look, I know full well that all of us on the spectrum are by no means one homogenous group of people.

But neither is birth - it’s not an experience that has a ‘one size fits all’ option. No universal ‘hacks’ or ‘tips’.

But what I do know? Mainstream birth prep doesn’t always take into account just how different or challenging the experience can be when your brain is wired in a very specific way.

This post is for the crew - the ones who feel everything deeply and wants a birth space that feels safe, predictable and supportive AF.

You’re not too much, you just don’t have the right support… until now 😜

We have to stop narratives that police women’s choices.

It doesn’t matter, if you are a midwife/doula/person supporting someone and you personally wouldn’t choose to freebirth.

That’s your legal right.

In the same breath though, it’s also not your place - morally or ethically or LEGALLY to tell someone they can’t freebirth, or give them countless reasons as to why they shouldn’t.

It is their legal right and a perfectly reasonable thing for them to choose, if it feels right for their family.

Women are not victims which we need to save from their ‘bad’ choices.
