🎗️ Why Physio Works

Physiotherapy for horses is often seen as something to call on when there’s already a problem.

But in reality, it’s just as much about prevention as it is about resolution.

When I place my hands on a horse, I can feel where muscles are holding tension… where movement feels restricted… or where there’s a subtle reaction to touch that suggests discomfort.

Often, these are small changes.

Easy to miss.

But when we notice them early, we have the opportunity to respond before they develop into something more significant.

The impact isn’t just physical.

A horse who feels more comfortable will often show it in their behaviour.

Owners describe them as more willing…
softer in the contact…
or simply more at ease in themselves.

Those are the moments I value most.

Because they reflect something deeper than performance — a sense of comfort, trust, and ease.

Physiotherapy isn’t about forcing the body into shape.

It’s about listening.

Through feel… through behaviour… through the subtle responses each horse offers.

And over time, these small adjustments can make a meaningful difference — helping horses move, work, and live more comfortably.

Kinesiology tape can play a supporting role here, helping to reinforce those changes and maintain comfort between sessions.

Vital Stride is now offering Kinesiology Taping (K Tape) following a fantastic course with Sussex Equine Massage Therapy! 🎉

Kinesiology tape has been used since the 1970s and can be a valuable addition to a physiotherapy treatment plan. It may help to:
🐴 Improve circulation and lymphatic drainage
💪 Support muscles and reduce fatigue
✨ Provide pain relief
🦴 Address fascial restrictions
🔄 Assist joint movement and proprioception
🦵 Support tendons and ligaments

K Tape works by gently lifting the skin, creating a decompressive effect on the underlying tissues, while also providing continuous sensory input that may help to modulate pain through the pain gate theory.

As with all physiotherapy treatments, K Tape is not a standalone treatment but is used alongside a thorough assessment and tailored rehabilitation programme where appropriate.

How incredibly handsome is Cream!? 😍

I’ve had the pleasure of treating Cream regularly since his lovely owner bought him. Cream is on a maintenance schedule, and the improvements we’ve seen in this boy have been amazing.

Physiotherapy isn’t just for horses and dogs with injuries; it plays such an important role in keeping our animals happy, healthy, and performing at their best. 💃🏼

CPD @ the University of Nottingham 📚 🐾 🐴

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending a veterinary physiotherapy networking day at the University of Nottingham, bringing together students, clinicians, researchers and industry professionals.

It was ao good to connect with various organizations and exhibitors including Equicantis, Equigate, Companion Animal Health, Westville, RAMP and IRVAP, and to learn more about the products, services and opportunities available within the vet rehab industry.

I attended two amazing workshops:
⭐️ Objective equine gait assessment
⭐️ The use of shockwave therapy in canine rehabilitation

I also learnt a lot about regenerative medicine and stem cell therapy, highlighting the exciting developments taking place within veterinary medicine and rehabilitation.

And then, a super proud moment watching Emma Hoverd-Millar and Megssage Therapies presenting their dissertations. Emma with the effect of pole layout on equine movement and Meg exploring tail position, very excited to see the final product of their research.

Events like these are a fantastic reminder of how important collaboration, research and continued learning are within our profession. Staying up to date with emerging evidence allows us to continue providing the best possible care for our patients 💚.

Happy bank holiday everyone ☀️

With temperatures rising this week, it’s important to remember that your horse/dog may struggle in the heat far more quickly than we do.

Here is what you can do to help:

For dogs 🐶
✔️ Walk early morning/late evening
✔️ Avoid hit pavements
✔️ Provide fresh, cool water
✔️ Utilise cooling nags, shaded areas
✔️ Do NOT leave your dog in the car, even for a few minutes
✔️ Watch for signs of heatstroke, and consult your vet if concerned

For horses 🐴
✔️ Ride during cooler parts of the day/reduce workload
✔️ Ensure access to clean water and shade
✔️ Hose down after exercise, and do NOT scrape the water off
✔️ Monitor for dehydration and heat stress, consult your vet if concerned
