Endometriosis is an often devastatingly painful chronic condition that affects 1-in-10 women. It typically causes pelvic and menstrual pains that can be severe and negatively impact home/work/social life as well as fertility.
Adenomyosis affects approximately half of endometriosis sufferers and causes pelvic/menstrual pains, menstrual dysfunction, and impacts fertility.
Knowledge of these conditions is poor amongst women and healthcare providers and so its diagnosis is often delayed.
Treatment can offer significant improvements in quality of life with eradication of pain symptoms, menstrual function and improvement in fertility prospects.
Surgical treatment is the mainstay of endometriosis management, but the type of surgery is crucial to a successful outcome, and it is critical that the surgery is done correctly by gynaecologists that possess the skills to do so.
Procuring such surgery at a BSGE endometriosis centre helps to ensure affected women get the desired standard of procedure. The management of endometriosis should be holistic with consideration of the woman’s expectations, her age and fertility plans, and options for managing longer-term and recurrent pain symptoms.
Dr Edi-Osagie will be exploring all these issues at the Aurora Livestream at 7pm on Wednesday 17th June and will be joined by a pain management colleague (Dr Lily Lai) to share her experience of supporting women with this condition. We invite you to join us and please feel free to advise on issues you want us to cover or highlight.
