Congratulations to Midwife and DAISY Award winner Cassie Clarke!

Nominated by patients who experienced a complicated delivery at our Midwife-Led Unit, Cassie's care began the moment they arrived. She listened carefully to their birth preferences, supported them throughout labour, and when pain became overwhelming, she struck the perfect balance between honouring their choices and making sure they were truly heard. "She got the balance perfectly," one nominator reflected. "She acknowledged what we wanted but also made sure we knew all our options."

When Cassie spotted subtle warning signs, she didn't hesitate. She calmly communicated her concerns and led the family to the consultant-led unit. An emergency C-section followed, and within an hour, a healthy baby girl arrived safely.

But Cassie's care didn't end at delivery. She stayed, providing reassurance every step of the way. After the baby spent time in NICU, Cassie made time to visit and check in on the family.

"We couldn't have wished for a better person to support us through it all," one nominator wrote. "There is nothing I would have changed about how things were.

DAISY awards are sponsored by East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals Charity. You can nominate a staff member for a DAISY Award on our website: https://www.enherts-tr.nhs.uk/patient-visitors/daisy-award/

Was there something about your maternity care you wish had been different?

Or perhaps someone provided exceptional care that you think we should learn from?

We want to hear all experiences - positive, difficult or somewhere in between.

This is a supportive opportunity to share your views with Lister MNVP and the Patient Experience Midwife and help us understand what matters to families.

We want maternity services to hear from everyone - not just the voices we hear most often.

That’s why we’re particularly encouraging parents and pregnant people from communities whose experiences may be less represented in maternity feedback to join our focus group.

This includes Black, Asian and other minority ethnic communities, families whose first language is not English, young parents, LGBTQ+ families and disabled parents.

Your experience matters. Your perspective matters. Your voice can help shape better care.

Please share this invitation within your family, friendship and community networks.

Every pregnancy. Every birth. Every family. Every voice. ❤️

We want our focus group to reflect the diversity of the families who use our maternity services.

We’re looking for parents and pregnant people from all backgrounds and communities to join us.

We especially encourage participation from people whose voices are often underrepresented in maternity services, including:

🤎 Black, Asian and other minority ethnic communities
🌍 Families whose first language is not English
👩 Young parents
🏳️‍🌈 LGBTQ+ families
♿ Disabled parents

Whatever your background or experience, your voice matters.

Maternity and Neonatal Voices Partnerships (MNVP) are here to listen to your experiences of local maternity and neonatal services. We provide a safe and independent space to feedback, making your voice heard with local NHS Trust to help influence learning and drive positive improvement.

We know that following the publication of the Ockenden Report this week, which shares important findings relating to maternity and neonatal services, may prompt thoughts, questions or reflections from local people. Our thoughts are with everyone affected.

If you feel affected by the findings of these reports, we want you to know that support is available. We would encourage you to contact your GP, access local talking therapies service, or reach out to your local perinatal mental health service for support.

You can self-refer to your local talking therapies service here: https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/mental-health-services/find-nhs-talking-therapies-for-anxiety-and-depression/

You said… we did 💜

Families told Lister MNVP that communication on the postnatal ward could be unclear, particularly around discharge. Women shared that they often didn’t know what was still outstanding for themselves or their baby, or why delays were happening.

Working together with maternity teams at East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust, this feedback helped shape wider postnatal discharge pathway improvements focused on reducing delays caused by process and communication issues rather than clinical need.

As part of this work, we co-produced:

✅ A “Going Home” discharge video
✅ A “Journey Home After Birth” checklist

These resources aim to improve communication, provide clearer information for families and help women feel more informed and prepared when leaving hospital with their baby.

Thank you to all the women and families who shared their experiences through walk the patch, surveys and community engagement to help make these improvements possible.
