Absolutely wonderful last week of term with our Tiny Thrivers and their grown ups in our wellbeing classes for 2-5 year olds this week! πŸ₯°πŸ’š We explored the emotion 'proud' through yoga, games, regulation zones and we shared a delicious recipe card! πŸ˜‹

I felt very proud of our little people ☺️ Watching them grow, learn the zones and how to look after their bodies has been so rewarding πŸ₯°πŸ’š

Did you know that regulation skills are learnt (not developed with age) and children who can self-regulate are more likely to perform better at school, build stronger more meaningful relationships and live happier healthier lives!

Why not join us for a Tiny Thrivers stay and play session to have lots of fun, whilst learning invaluable life skills?

Don't forget to BOOK your spot for autumn term 1! I'll be very much looking forward to welcoming you all back in September! πŸ€©πŸ’š

πŸ“£ Proud regulation moment πŸ“£

Arthur (age 6), had his first EVER gymnastics competition last weekend! I felt very proud as I watched him remember all the steps for his floor routine, bar work and super cool jumping moves off of the mini trampoline thing (not sure what it's called πŸ˜‚). He looked like he was having great fun! ❀️

At the end of the competition, it was the award ceremony. πŸ₯‡πŸ₯ˆπŸ₯‰

Arthur didn't win any medals and I was watching his little disappointed face from the audience as he watched his friends take to the podium.

When I went to pick him up from the door I was fully expecting floods of tears and a leap into my arms. BUT he calmly came up to me with a proud smile on his face. I gave him a great big hug and told him how proud I was, how much I enjoyed watching his performance 🎭 and asked him if he had lots of fun.

He replied, "I had so much fun! I was really really disappointed when I didn't win, but mummy I was a good sportsman and congratulated those who did!" πŸ₯°πŸ’š

This made me feel even more proud, he had recognised his feeling of disappointment, worked through it to feel it in a safe way using his regulation techniques, shared his big feeling with his trusted grown-up and found it within himself to be happy and feel pride for his friend who had won πŸ†

For those of you who know Arthur, this is a really big regulation milestone for him πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’š

On Saturday, I found myself sat on the floor by the tills in John Lewis, children in tow, trying to think how on earth I was going to get out of this situation and get everyone back to the car safely.

Now, taking our 4 children out on my own is something that I do very successfully and very frequently. I take them out to dinner by myself, we do day trips to the zoo, farm, parks, we have in fact done trips to the shopping centre successfully many times before. But how did I get here? Why had it gone so 'wrong' and how did we all get back into a functioning state?

I feel that it's important for me to share this story with you, especially since I've been sharing the regulation wins and because it's real. Even when you have been teaching regulation skills, there are times when it works beautifully well and times when it doesn't quite go to plan.

BUT, you can learn from these experiences. Reflect to identify where it went wrong, what was behind the behaviours? What were the signs that I might have missed?
I have certainly reminded myself that's it's important to notice where your limits are and where your children's limits are, so that you can adjust your expectations/ plans accordingly and avoid overstimulation. Which in our case, led to different types of dis-regulation.

This week at Tiny Thrivers, we embarked on a bear hunt yoga adventure with a twist and explored the emotion 'disappointment' 🐻 we had LOTS of fun! πŸ˜ƒ

Next week we'll be going on an island adventure, exploring the emotion 'loneliness' and we'll finish with a beautiful story about love to help us mange the emotion loneliness (also very helpful for little ones who might be transitioning to their own bedroom or starting nursery / school soon πŸ₯°). I hope to see you there! πŸ˜ŠπŸ’š

πŸ“£ Proud regulation moment...

✨Sylvia (age 2), was feeling upset because a grown up had told her that it's not ok to decorate the carpet with sharpie pen! 😬
✨She takes herself to her 'safe space' (calm corner), which is in her bed πŸ’š
✨ I (as the grown up), follow her upstairs after one minute to offer a cuddle
✨Felicity (age 4) has beat me to it. As I approach she says, "don't worry mummy, we've got this! She's feeling upset now and we're taking some deep breaths together" πŸ₯°
.. this was a very proud moment as a mother, because at age 2 and 4, these tiny humans were able to do what many adults of my generation still struggle with (including me!). They identified what they were feeling, how to feel that feeling safely and what to do to look after their bodies. Not only that, but they supported each other πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’š

This goes to show that it's never too early to teach regulation skills, it's a learnt skill (not developed with age). Children who can self-regulate are more likely to perform better at school, build stronger more meaningful relationships and live happier healthier lives!
