YOUR HORSE’S TOPLINE

Who doesn’t want their horse to have a beautiful topline?! But most people think a good topline comes from harder work, increased ridden work (or only ridden work 🙈), or some type of magic supplement.

It doesn’t.

A strong, healthy topline ofcourse starts with quality hay and feed that is relevant to your horse’s needs. (Not to mention correctly fitting tack).

But nutrition is only the beginning.

The part that takes time and cannot be rushed is the training.

Quiet, consistent work.

Not bigger and longer sessions.

Not harder sessions.

Just thoughtful and meaningful work every day.

Better balance. Better posture. A horse that is a little stronger than the day before.

The horses with the best toplines aren’t usually worked the hardest.

They’re worked the smartest.

HARD GROUND: THE EFFECTS AND HOW TO HELP YOUR HORSE

Whilst most of the British population is enjoying an incredibly warm summer (hello climate change), as equestrians it continues to add to the multiple concerns that we have regarding our horses and their welfare.

The hard ground for one is at the forefront of all of our minds as we know that hard ground conditions can be detrimental to our horses legs and overall musculoskeletal system.

The concussive force generated as a horse moves at speed on a firm surface is mostly absorbed by the structures of the hoof then dissipating further up the leg moving into the bones, joints and soft tissues.

‘A much bigger issue is that hard ground is fast ground,’ (Hattie Lawrence MRCVS of Valley Equine Hospital). Hattie explains that on firm ground there is no ‘holding’ factor to check the horse’s speed – therefore increasing the injury risk.

COMMON INJURIES CAUSED BY HARD GROUND
❌️Concussion and jarring
❌️Bruised soles
❌️Splints
❌️Tendon injuries
❌️Sore shins

SIGNS THAT YOUR HORSE MAY BE AFFECTED BY HARD GROUND
❌️Shortened stride
❌️Increased tension through the muscular system

HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR HORSE MANAGE WITH HARD GROUND
✅️Take it easy over hard ground and most definitely consider going no faster than walk and trot
✅️Good shoeing if your horse is shod and correct hoof balance if barefoot with appropriate hoof boots
✅️Cold hose or apply ice/cooling boots after work on hard ground
✅️Get your horse’s musculoskeletal system assessed regularly by your qualified service provider (equine massage therapist, physio, etc) to ensure a proactive approach to any potential tension in your horse’s body

✅️✅️But most importantly, ‘if it feels like concrete underfoot and you can save your horse for another day, then you probably should.’

JOSTLING

Muscle jostling provides excellent proprioceptive feedback by stimulating mechanoreceptors within the muscular tissue - therefore bringing the level of muscle tension into conscious awareness, which helps the horse relax the muscle.

This oscillatory movement promotes the movement of blood and lymphatic fluid by creating small jolts within the tissue. In addition this gentle rocking is a great way to stimulate the parasympathetic system - promoting relaxation.

These certainly are some grand prix performing hamstrings ☝🏽☝🏽

As en ESMT with a passion for horses that runs deep to my very core (anyone else's childhood bedroom full of horse posters rather than boybands? 🙋🏽‍♀️) I tend to become incredibly invested in a client's horse as soon as I meet them.

So seeing such positive changes in the horses that I really care about honestly does make me a little emosh 🥹

Here we have lovely Ruby Rubes showing such great improvement following alot of work and making some relatively big changes to her hoof balance. We're not out of the woods yet, but seeing her happy bopping head really does make me smile 🫶🏽 Thank you to her mum Beth Donnelly for trusting my advice and guidance ✨️
