Listen live today as I discuss the walking group!
Tune into the ‘Let’s Talk’ radio show with presenter Saima Ashraf Mbe on Tuesday 16th June 2026 from 6.20pm till 7pm LIVE only on Pendle Community Radio - Awaz 103.1FM
Joining presenter Saima Ashraf MBE will be respected guest Saniya Janjua who is the Community Partnership Manager at Minhaj Welfare Foundation and the walk leader behind Saniya’s Strolls, a women-only walking group that has become a valued and supportive space for women within the local community.
Saniya launched the walks last year while working as a Physical Activities Network Coordinator with Together an Active Future, after recognising a lack of accessible walking opportunities for women in the Bradley ward. What started as a small initiative has blossomed into a thriving community group, helping women improve their physical and mental wellbeing, reduce social isolation, and build meaningful, lasting friendships.
Despite moving on from her role, Saniya has continued to lead the walks on a voluntary basis due to the group’s continued growth and positive impact. Her dedication has helped create a welcoming environment where women feel empowered, supported, and motivated to be more active.
Today, Saniya works closely with the Muslim Sports Foundation to better understand and address barriers to participation in physical activity. Her work is also shaped by her own lived experiences, particularly since beginning to wear the niqab, giving her a unique insight into some of the challenges Muslim women can face when accessing sport and physical activity opportunities.
Most recently, on Saturday, Saniya joined forces with Asma from the Muslim Sports Foundation, Brother Omar from West View Better Health Leisure Centre in Preston, and Khadija from Krimmz Youth Club in Bolton to host a Sisters Active Day for girls aged 13–16 at West View Leisure Centre in Preston. The event was a tremendous success, creating a vibrant, safe and empowering space where young girls were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, build confidence, make new friendships, and discover the joy of being physically active. The day was filled with energy, laughter and encouragement, leaving participants feeling inspired, motivated and empowered.
Saniya continues to be a passionate advocate for creating inclusive opportunities that enable women and girls to become more active, connected, confident, and engaged within their communities. Through her work and voluntary efforts, she is helping to break down barriers and inspire positive change for future generations.
