THESE LIGHTS DON’T WORK!

I recently bought some solar lights for the garden. Very enthusiastically, I put them into the ground and waited for a sunny day… I waited, and waited … and waited for days!

Nothing happened!

Not even a glimmer of light at night time!

“These lights are rubbish! They don’t work!” I thought.

Then I thought I had better check that I had followed the instructions and set them up properly.

Inside each light was a button - on and off - and I had not turned the switch on! So the batteries were being charged, but this energy was going nowhere!

Straight away, I went to every light and made sure the switch on each one of them was turned to the “on position.”

And last night, every single, one of them lit up - bright and beautiful in the darkness!

This got me thinking …

How often, every day, do we experience things that give us energy and recharge our batteries, but we are not “switched on?”

It might be a compliment, praise, a sunny day, a clear run in traffic on the way to work, your favourite song on the radio…

But instead of storing up these positive experiences, they pass us by and we are left feeling empty, exhausted and flat?

One thing I have learned is this…

If we are “switched on” and learn to notice and maximise these positive, energy- giving experiences, then we too, will be able to shine bright … even after a long hard day!

THAT’S SOME TEAM!

Yesterday at a football tournament, I noticed some of the girls from our team frantically shaking a tree near a hedge at the far corner of the field. I deduced that they must have kicked a ball up into one of the tall trees!

So myself and 2 of the Dads set off armed with an umbrella 🌂 to see if we could help…!

Long story short!

The ball was properly stuck -
about 10 ft high in a branch of a prickly, thorny tree overhanging a wire fencing barrier… surrounded by nettles and brambles!

This was not going to be an easy rescue!

However we were not easily deterred … plus we had a captive audience of the girls watching our rescue attempt!

The 3 of us worked really well together - - 1 of the Dads held the opened umbrella to “catch” the ball when it fell!
1 of the Dads climbed up to the tree, and I held back some prickly branches and made a clearing for us to get in and out.

I must say the girls were quite amazed when we returned with the ball in hand!

… and we all have the scratches to prove it as well!

As we walked back, we all felt quite proud of our achievement. I realised it needed all 3 of us working closely together to make this rescue mission successful.

It got me thinking…

In a team that is united, communicates well and works towards a common goal, It is surprising what can be achieved!

SQUISHIES!

I have started a couple of courses in a local High School today, and put a variety of squishies and balls ⚽️ 🏀 🏈 on the table.

The kids loved them!

For students who are prone to fidget and find it hard to keep their hands still, they really help!

They are also helpful to demonstrate how important it is to learn how to bounce back not shrink back … and to develop the ability to return to your original shape even in the midst of life’s pressures and challenges!

THE WRONG BIN!

As a mum of teenage kids, I am keen to get them helping at home. I must admit this is not always received with the level of enthusiasm I would hope for … but nonetheless I keep persevering!

Yesterday I noticed that a spare black bin outside was overflowing with rubbish bags. This initially confused me, because this is a “spare bin” (that is kept separate from the other outdoor bins) - not the bin that we put rubbish in, and it has not ever been emptied.

After a short conversation with one of my kids, I realised that there had been a misunderstanding! I thought I had been very clear in my communication …

“Please put the rubbish bag out in the black bin!”

The problem was, there are two black bins!

Yet again, I have realised the importance of clear specific communication, and sometimes the need to model behaviour and go through tasks in person, so that there is no confusion!

Now, I just need to wait for the next bin collection day and hope all of the rubbish bags will fit in!

IS IT WORTH THE EFFORT?!?!

I painted my toe nails to make a special effort for a party…

I have to admit that I find the whole process of nail varnish really frustrating and boring. I can never sit still for long enough to let the varnish dry!
I always seem to move too quickly, and then it all smudges and goes bumpy!

So 10 minutes, after painting my nails, and realising that the overall effect was far from smooth and professional, I wondered was it worth all the effort?

Later that night, I did have one comment about my purple toe nails and how it matched my dress!

So perhaps it was worth it after all!

It got me thinking that sometimes it is easy to not bother or put the effort in…

It doesn’t need to be perfect, but sometimes a bit of effort does get noticed!
