The impact of sickle cell disease is not limited to the person living with it, it can drastically reshape the entire family. It puts the family in a place of continously trying to cope with regular hospital admissions, cancelled plans and countless nights without sleep.

The parents' constant fear of a crisis and wondering when another one could occur.

The emotional draining is enormous padded with unending moments of anxiety, feeling of helplessness, guilt and exhaustion, yet most of these pains remain unknown to the public.

Talking about the financial impact, for a financially struggling family, sickle cell can turn an ordinary hospital visit to a crisis. The frequent admissions, medications, transportation and other healthcare costs create massive leaks in the family pockets.

This is why the talk and awareness of sickle cell disease must go beyond the discussion around the condition, we must also include the emotional and financial weight that comes with this diagnosis.

Knowing your genotype before marriage helps you make an informed decision.
However, when you are a carrier (AS), you have limited choice of marriage partners because you dare not get on with another carrier......it must be AA. Otherwise, you could have a 25% chance of having a child with sickle in every 4 children. It could be any of the children from 1-4.

Imagine having suitors of your choice, ticking all the boxes but both of you are carriers (AS).
Some people I know took the risk in the past, but if you ever had a sibling who suff£red and d!ed from sickle cell disease, I do not think you'll want to give it a try.

I have massive soft spot for sickle cell patients, i can go extra mile for all my patients but when a patient with sickle cell disease is involved......I literally jump the extra mile.
This is because I'm a vict!m of genetic ignorance!
I'm not a patient but I have been negatively affected by my parents' unawareness and actions.
In July 2005, I lost my youngest brother to sickle cell disease. It was more painful because.....at the time my mother couldn't afford to give him the regular medical attention he needed due to financial constraints and all of us were still in school. No help from anywhere!!

Always ensure that your child's marital destiny is not predetermined by your wrong marriage decision.......do you know your genotype as an African. Be wise.......your child should not suffer for your ignorance.

Working as a nurse in high-pressure environments, I've seen how digestive symptoms affects the quality of life, confidence, sleep, work and mental wellbeing.
In this post, I explain:
■What IBS is
■Common symptoms
■Possible triggers
■The difference between IBS and IBD
■Simple ways IBS can be managed
■ When to seek medical advice

What Is IBS?
Irritable Bowel Syndrome, commonly called IBS, is a long-term digestive/abdominal pain or discomfort with altered stool forms or frequency for up to or more than 6 months.

It mainly affects the large intestine (colon),
sometimes the lower digestive tract.

IBS does not usually damage the bowel permanently, but it can significantly affect:
◇Comfort,
◇Confidence,
◇Eating habits,
◇Sleep,
◇Work,
◇Social life,
◇Mental wellbeing.

Common Symptoms of IBS which can come and go in “flare-ups.” includes:
◇Abdominal cramps,
◇Bloating,
◇Excessive gas/wind,
◇Diarrhoea,
◇Constipation,
◇Alternating diarrhoea and constipation,
◇Feeling like you haven’t emptied your bowel properly,
◇Mucus in stool,
◇Urgency to use the toilet.

Some people also experience:
◇Fatigue,
◇Nausea,
◇Back pain,
◇Anxiety linked to symptoms.

What Causes IBS?
The exact cause is not fully understood, but can be linked to:
◇Sensitive intestines,
◇Abnormal bowel movement patterns,
◇Stress and anxiety,
◇Food triggers,
◇Previous gut infection

◇Common triggers:
◇Stress,
◇Caffeine,
◇Spicy foods,
◇Fatty foods,
◇Alcohol,
◇Poor sleep,
◇Irregular meals.

Difference between IBS and IBD

What happens in IBS:
◇Functional bowel disorder
◇No visible bowel damage
◇Not inflammatory
◇Symptoms can still be more severe

IBD Includes:
◇Crohn's Disease
◇Ulcerative Colitis
IBD causes:
◇Inflammation,
◇Bowel damage,
◇Bleeding,
◇Ulcers.

How IBS Is Managed
There is no single cure, but many people improve with:
◇Dietary changes,
◇Stress management,
◇Regular meals,
◇Hydration,
◇Exercise,
◇Improved sleep,
◇Identifying triggers,
◇Medication when needed.

When To Seek Medical Advice
See a doctor urgently if symptoms include:
◇Blood in stool,
◇Unexplained weight loss,
◇Persistent vomiting,
◇Severe abdominal pain,
◇Anaemia,
◇Family history of bowel cancer or IBD.
