Phosphorus is there. So why isn't the crop accessing it?

A soil test may show sufficient phosphorus.
Phosphate may have been applied to meet crop requirements.
Yet the crop can still struggle to access enough phosphorus when it needs it.
Why?

Because phosphorus supply and phosphorus uptake are not the same thing.

There are three areas to consider:
🌱 ACCESS
Can roots physically reach the phosphorus?

🔁 AVAILABILITY
Is phosphorus available for crop uptake?

🌍 SOIL RESERVES
Is the crop effectively utilising the phosphorus already present?

Root development, soil structure, pH, moisture, temperature, and biological activity can all influence the answer.

Before deciding what to do, understand what may be limiting uptake.

When did you last test your spray water? 💧

The water going into your spray tank can influence herbicide performance before the spray even reaches the target.

Hard water contains dissolved minerals such as calcium and magnesium, which can interact with glyphosate and other systemic herbicides, reducing the amount of active available to do its job.

And water quality isn't consistent.

Mains water. Borehole water. Rainwater.
Different sources can mean very different water hardness.

So, ahead of autumn herbicide applications, there are three useful questions to ask:
➡️ Do you know how hard your spray water is?
➡️ Do you know the result in ppm?
➡️ When did you last test it?

What did your crop actually remove?

Harvest may be finished, but the crop can still tell you something important about phosphorus uptake.

If you had grain analysed this harvest, combining grain phosphorus concentration with yield can give you a more accurate picture of phosphorus offtake - rather than relying solely on standard assumptions.

That can help you understand:
✅ What the crop actually captured
✅ How actual offtake compares with standard values
✅ Whether phosphorus capture differed between fields
✅ What that could mean for future phosphate decisions

It's worth considering for next harvest. Grain analysis adds another piece of evidence to help understand how effectively the crop is accessing and using phosphorus.

Drought today. Slugs tomorrow?

🌱 After one of the hottest summers on record, most conversations are focused on soil moisture, drilling conditions & how best to establish the next crop.

But while drought has dominated the season, it's important not to overlook the risks that could threaten establishment once drilling begins.

A common assumption is that a dry summer means fewer slugs. The reality is often more complex. Slugs can survive extended dry periods by remaining inactive in protected areas until conditions become more favourable.

The forecast rain this week clearly won't undo months of drought, but it doesn't take a lot of moisture at the soil surface to encourage slug activity. With volunteers emerging, crop residues present and autumn drilling plans underway, now is the time to assess risk rather than make assumptions.

Protecting establishment is often far more effective than reacting once damage is visible. That's why it's worth considering proactive approaches to slug management, including De Sangosse ferric phosphate pellets that can be applied up to seven days before drilling.

🌾 Can Innovation in One Crop Benefit Another?

While working with De Sangosse on oilseed r**e, a discussion led to an interesting question: could this biological product have a role to play in spring barley?

With the season's hot, dry conditions raising concerns around brackling risk, the product was applied to this crop with the aim of helping maintain stem strength and support ear integrity as harvest approaches.

It's not something we've tried in spring barley before, but that's the value of collaboration between growers, agronomists and industry partners - sharing ideas and exploring new opportunities where they may add value.
