Animal walks are a fun and engaging activity that can support a range of children’s occupational therapy goals.

Movements such as bear walks, crab walks and frog jumps provide proprioceptive input through the joints and muscles, which can help children develop body awareness, postural control and regulation. They also encourage core and upper-body strength, bilateral coordination, motor planning, balance and gross motor skills.

As children copy different animal movements, they practise coordinating their bodies, following instructions and sequencing movements, while the playful nature of the activity can increase motivation and participation.
