A 2024 systematic review found that nature-based walking interventions can improve mood, optimism, mental wellbeing, and reduce stress, anxiety and rumination.

As therapists, findings like these are exciting.

They remind us that the environment in which therapy takes place can matter just as much as the conversation itself.

Walk & Talk Therapy isn't simply about taking a session outdoors.

It's about thoughtfully combining movement, nature and therapeutic conversation to create a different experience for clients, one that many find less pressured, more natural and more conducive to reflection.

Walking side by side can help some clients feel more at ease, reduce the intensity of face-to-face interaction, and create space for thoughts and emotions to emerge in a different way.

Of course, this approach isn't suitable for everyone, which is why it's important that therapists understand the ethical, practical and clinical considerations before introducing it into their practice.

That's exactly what we'll explore in my Taking Therapy Outdoors workshop this September.

Together, we'll look at how to integrate Walk & Talk Therapy safely, ethically and confidently, while connecting with a growing community of therapists who are passionate about expanding the ways they support their clients.

If you've been curious about taking therapy outdoors, I'd love to welcome you.

One question I'm sometimes asked is how I prepare for a role that involves walking with clients for many hours each week.

The simple answer is... I look after myself.

Not because I have to, but because I choose to.

For me, that looks like a combination of strength training, HIIT sessions, stretching, staying hydrated, and making time to move my body in different ways.

Exercise has become part of my own wellbeing routine. It helps me feel physically strong, mentally refreshed, and ready to support my clients in the best way I can. Attending ap_fitness has been great for me!

Of course, this isn't what every therapist needs to do. We all have different ways of looking after ourselves, and that's exactly as it should be.

For me, it's about practising what I often encourage others to do: prioritise your wellbeing, move in a way that feels good for you, and recognise that looking after yourself isn't a luxury, it's an important part of being able to support others.

I'm fortunate that my work naturally encourages me to get outdoors, keep moving, and connect with people every day.

How do you look after your own wellbeing outside of work?

I'm a therapist, and I believe therapy should fit the person...not the other way around.

No two people are the same.

So why should therapy look exactly the same for everyone?

Some people feel most comfortable sitting face to face.

Others prefer online sessions from the comfort of home.

Some find it easier to talk whilst walking side by side in nature.

As therapists, I believe one of our greatest strengths is offering choice where it's appropriate.

Because when people feel comfortable, safe and heard, they're often better able to engage in the therapeutic process.

That's one of the reasons I'm so passionate about Walk & Talk Therapy.

Not because it's better than traditional therapy.
But because it's another option that may be the right fit for some people.

Therapy isn't one-size-fits-all, and I think that's something worth celebrating.

The Early Bird discount ends next week.

But this isn’t really about saving £15.

The real question is:

Where do you want your practice to be six months from now?

Or feeling clearer, more informed, and more confident about what’s possible?

Professional development is rarely about a single workshop.
It’s about opening new doors.

New ideas.
New approaches.
New confidence.

And perhaps most importantly, new connections with other therapists who share your curiosity and passion for developing their practice.

The NHS recently announced plans to reward people for walking regularly.

The evidence supporting movement and wellbeing continues to grow.

As therapists, it’s worth asking:

How might movement influence the therapeutic process itself?

Walk & Talk Therapy isn’t simply about being outdoors.

It’s about understanding how movement, environment and conversation can work together.

That’s exactly what we’ll be exploring in September’s workshops.

Therapy should be personal.

The choice of:
WHO you work with.
WHEN you attend sessions.
WHAT you bring to therapy.
And HOW you choose to engage in the process.

For some people, sitting face-to-face in a therapy room feels exactly right.

For others, online sessions offer flexibility and comfort.

And for some, walking side-by-side outdoors creates the space they need to think, reflect and talk more freely.

There is no "best" way.

Only the approach that feels right for the individual.

One of the things I value most about Walk & Talk Therapy is that it offers another choice.

Because therapy should adapt to people, not the other way around.

One of the most powerful shifts in therapy can be recognising that a thought is not automatically a fact.

Our minds are constantly generating interpretations.
Sometimes helpful.
Sometimes protective.
Sometimes completely inaccurate.

When we learn to step back and observe our thoughts rather than immediately believing them, we create space for choice.

Space to question.
Space to respond differently.
Space to see ourselves and our situations more clearly.

What thought have you recently challenged?
