Horse riding as part of physiotherapy
Horse Riding has many potential benefits, such as:
- improved posture, strength and balance
- fitness
- sensory integration
- fun
- particpation
- confidence building
- planning
to name but a few.
Horse riding can be a great tool, but sometimes it is useful to find a skilled worker who knows how to use it. For example, a physiotherapist trained in Equine-Assisted Physiotherapy might be useful if the rider is
- not able to maintain a symmetrical posture,
- struggles to stabilise part(s) of their body themselves,
- unable to balance well,
- experiments discomfort or
- not able to progress their riding skills themselves.
An equine-assisted physiotherapist can assess what is holding the rider back and make recommendations on how to move forward. This could be through advice, individually-tailored exercises off the horses, or through mounted sessions with the guidance of a physiotherapist, such as hippotherapy (physiotherapy through the movement of the horse) or joint rider sessions with their riding instructor.
Happy to brainstorm with you!
