If bottle banks could talk... 🍷
Summer is for enjoying.
But it’s amazing how quickly holiday habits can become everyday habits.

This isn’t about never having a drink or feeling guilty about enjoying yourself.

It’s simply a reminder to pause before September arrives and ask yourself:

Which of my summer habits do I want to keep, and which am I happy to leave behind?

I’ve written more about this in my latest newsletter, including why your body can feel a little out of sync by the end of the summer holidays and a few simple ways to make September feel easier, without a detox or dramatic reset.

Have you become more anxious in midlife?
If you feel more on edge, more easily overwhelmed or like your stress tolerance has disappeared, you’re not imagining it.

Hormonal changes during perimenopause can affect the brain systems that help regulate mood, resilience and your response to stress.

At the same time, you’re often dealing with some of the busiest years of life. Careers. Teenagers. Ageing parents. Relationships. Poor sleep.

It’s no wonder many women suddenly feel like they’re running on empty.

The good news is that you can support your nervous system with the basics:
✔ Prioritise protein at every meal.
✔ Keep your blood sugar stable by avoiding long gaps between meals.
✔ Eat plenty of omega 3 rich foods (oily fish like salmon, mackerel, anchovies, sardines and herrings).
✔ Include fermented foods to support your gut brain connection.
✔ Include magnesium-rich foods like nuts, seeds, leafy greens and beans.
✔ Drink green tea, which naturally contains L-theanine, or speak to a healthcare professional about whether a supplement is appropriate.

Hormones aren’t the whole story, but they can be an important piece of the puzzle.

Have you noticed your anxiety change during midlife?

Happy International Self Care Day.
Self care doesn’t always have to be productive or feel worthy.
Sometimes it’s getting outside.
It could be going for a walk or cooking a nourishing meal.
And sometimes it’s switching your brain off, collapsing on the sofa and watching something with absolutely no educational value whatsoever.
Rest isn’t something you have to earn.
The important thing is you find something to switch you out of fight or flight every single day.
Today’s self care? TV. And I’m perfectly happy with that.
What’s your favourite way to unwind?

My son looked at his birthday cake and asked:
“Mummy… you didn’t put anything healthy in it, did you?”
Although I often add some cottage cheese or flaxseed to bakes, for my son’s birthday I didn’t mess around with the recipe.

As a nutritionist, I eat cake. I eat sweets. I enjoy birthdays, holidays and celebrations.

Because healthy eating isn’t about making every food “healthy”. It’s about what you eat most of the time, not some of the time.

Most of your meals can nourish your body with protein, fibre, fruit, vegetables and healthy fats.
And sometimes? You simply enjoy the birthday cake.
That’s what balance looks like.

One slice of cake doesn’t undo a healthy lifestyle.

As a nutritionist, I spend a lot of time talking about food... ... but today I’m talking about hugs.
A huge review of more than 200 studies found that affectionate touch can improve both mental and physical wellbeing, helping to reduce stress, anxiety, depression and even pain.
Touch is one of the ways we communicate safety. A cuddle with your child, a hug from your partner, holding a friend’s hand or even stroking your dog can help calm your nervous system.
It’s a good reminder that health isn’t just about what we eat.
It’s also about how connected we feel to the people around us.
Today, don’t underestimate the power of a cuddle.

Should women over 40 stop HIIT because it raises cortisol?
Short answer: No.
One of the biggest myths I see on social media is that any rise in cortisol is bad.

Cortisol is a normal, healthy hormone. It helps you wake up in the morning, respond to challenges and adapt to exercise. A temporary rise during a HIIT workout is exactly what you’d expect.

The issue isn’t that HIIT raises cortisol.

The issue is when your body is already under pressure from poor sleep, chronic stress, under-eating or not allowing enough time to recover.

If that’s you, adding more high-intensity exercise on top may not be the best choice right now.

HIIT isn’t the enemy.

Chronically running on empty is.

Instead of asking, “Does HIIT raise cortisol?”, ask yourself:
• Am I sleeping well?
• Am I eating enough?
• Am I recovering between sessions?
• Do I actually feel stronger and fitter?

Exercise should challenge your body, not constantly exhaust it.

Save this if you’ve been told to ditch HIIT because of cortisol, and follow for more evidence-based nutrition and midlife advice.

If Bounty bars had a glow up...
These no-bake chocolate coconut bites are rich, satisfying and take just minutes to make.

Unlike many shop-bought treats, they’re made with simple ingredients that provide healthy fats, a little fibre and less sugar than most chocolate bars. Because they’re so rich, you’ll often find one or two is enough to satisfy a craving.

Ingredients
100g dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher)
150g smooth peanut butter or almond butter
2 tbsp coconut oil
40g toasted coconut flakes
Pinch of flaky sea salt

Method
Toast the coconut flakes in a dry frying pan for 2 to 3 minutes until golden.
Melt the dark chocolate and coconut oil together.
Stir in the nut butter until smooth.
Fold through most of the toasted coconut, reserving a little for the topping.
Spoon into silicone moulds or mini cupcake cases.
Sprinkle with the remaining toasted coconut and a pinch of flaky sea salt.
Chill for 30 to 60 minutes until firm.

Every client is different, but this is a great example of why I always look at the bigger picture.

This client came to me with low energy, chronic back pain and bloating. Within days of making some targeted changes to her diet, she was already noticing a difference.

As we dug a little deeper, a comprehensive stool test uncovered some underlying gut issues that we wouldn’t otherwise have known about. That gave us another piece of the puzzle and allowed us to tailor her nutrition plan even further.

By the end of our time working together:
- No more bloating
- Energy transformed. She told me she could finally get out of bed feeling refreshed.
- Her back pain score dropped from 6/6 at our first appointment to just 0.5/6 by the end of our programme.

Nutrition can have a profound impact on energy, digestion, inflammation and how you feel every day.

If you’re living with symptoms you’ve come to accept as “normal”, you don’t have to simply put up with them.

“But I’m not hungry at breakfast…”
I hear this all the time.
Not feeling hungry first thing doesn’t necessarily mean your body doesn’t need fuel.
Appetite is influenced by hormones, habit, sleep, stress and even what time you ate the night before. If you’ve skipped breakfast for years, you may simply not get strong hunger cues in the morning.
But here’s why I often encourage midlife women to eat something anyway.
Breakfast is a valuable opportunity to get protein in early. That’s increasingly important as we get older and need to work harder to maintain muscle.
It can also help keep energy steadier and reduce the likelihood of playing catch-up later in the day when you’re tired, hungry and far more likely to grab whatever is quickest.
You don’t need to force down a huge breakfast.
Start small. Greek yoghurt and berries. Eggs. A protein smoothie. Overnight oats with added protein.
Sometimes appetite follows routine.
Are you a breakfast person or is it coffee all the way until lunch?
