The Trich Prof

The Trich Prof I live with, study, and advocate for people with body-focused repetitive behaviours (BFRBs: picking, pulling or biting of hair, skin or nails).

BFRBs are not a choice or a character flaw. Share anything to help me raise awareness and reduce stigma! 🙏

Does anyone else have a favourite song that has helped them on their BFRB journey? Emeli Sandé's 'Read all about it' is the headline song on my BFRB playlist - the lyrics are so perfect that they inspired these paintings. I play this song before doing talks, appearances etc and whenever I need a grounding reminder.

Please share your BFRB songs and if there are enough I'll make and share a playlist!

There is a lot to like about this workbook for kids, and one of the best is the title.

'Free to be me' feels so different than a version of 'how to stop picking/pulling/biting'. The book is filled with strategies and tips to support management of BFRBs, but from the title onwards it puts acceptance and compassion first, then management second. I am convinced that this is the best way to support long term wellbeing.

As a new author I'm also just learning how important and helpful reviews are. If you read a book and found it interesting, helpful or entertaining, please consider leaving a review!

There are a few things that I wish more people knew, that I think would make life easier for those of us who live with BFRBs.

I always go back to these 6 as the most important starting point.

What else do you wish more people knew?

Please share widely!

I'm excited to share that this year's BABCP will feature a BFRB symposium for the first time. https://babcp.com/events/2026-annual-conference/

BABCP (British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies) is the leading organisation for CBT practitioners in the UK. The majority of training courses for therapists includes little or nothing about BFRBs, and we're doing what we can to change that.

If you are a therapist (clinicial psychologist, counsellor, etc) - please consider coming along. If you have, or know, a therapist - please encourage them to come along.

If you're not a therapist, or can't make this year's BABCP, but would love to know more, please come to our own BFRB conference in Oxford in October! www.bfrbcon.org

Have you ever wondered about this strange state we go into when we're picking, pulling or biting?

Listen to me and Meryl talking about the 'trance-like state'. Over 200 people tuned in to hear it live, and we ran out of time for all the questions... seems like this is something we should be talking about more!

When You “Zone Out”: Understanding Hair Pulling Trance States
Free Live Webinar | 20th May, 12pm EDT | Hosted by TrichStop

Many people who live with trichotillomania (hair pulling) describe entering a kind of trance, a moment where attention fades, time slips by, and suddenly you realize: you’ve been pulling again.

These episodes can feel confusing and painful.
You may ask yourself:
“Why didn’t I notice?”
“Why can’t I just stop?”
“Is something wrong with me?”

You’re not alone — and there are answers.

Join us for a powerful session exploring the science and lived experience behind hair pulling trance states. We’ll talk about:

What’s happening when you “zone out”
Why understanding these states can reduce shame and build self-awareness
What small steps can help you feel more grounded and prevent you from entering the trance-like state.

With special guest Professor Clare Mackay ( The Trich Prof ) neuroscientist and BFRB advocate with lived experience, this is a conversation rooted in research and compassion.
