We're deep into the summer holidays and my focus is shattered by the disorder of the days. My baseline bonhomie has dipped as a result and I couldn't work out why, until I spoke with hypnotherapist Heather Makepeace.

For Heather, it all comes down to purpose - finding yours, and navigating from it.

"if I go too far off my course I'm going to start with the anxiety and even the depression — all of those things start to creep in when I'm not doing what I know I'm supposed to do."

Heather is no stranger to midlife wobbles herself. She returned home to South Africa in her 30s to join the family business. But a decade on, she faced a hard choice: scale up and risk losing the essence of who they were - or close the doors. She chose to call it time. As she made the decision, relief coursed through her body so strongly she can still feel its pulse.

Then she had to start from scratch. The safe bet was a finance job. But having long been fascinated by the mind and how we think, she took the plunge instead - and in her 40s, retrained as a hypnotherapist. Today she works with everyone from burnt-out professionals to Comrades ultramarathon runners.

"I value freedom, but it doesn't mean a lack of security isn't just as scary."

In this episode we get into the neuroscience behind hypnotherapy, training our brains to be more positive, identity shifts in midlife, and the antidote to imposter syndrome. Plus the myths and misconceptions around hypnosis - and whether she can really make us tell her all our secrets.

When went on maternity leave from her job running vogue.com, they threw her a cupcake party. Ta-ra and Toodle-pip, they said.

The assumption underneath the icing was that she was just going to fade away.

Instead Dolly came back with verve and fervour. When faced with the push and pull that comes with being a working mother, she looked for guidance on how to style it out but found… there was none.

This experience of returning to work as a new mum without a road map later became Leaving the Ladder Down: How to Combine Career and Motherhood, from the Women Who’ve Done It, a book built on the voices of women who’ve made working work.

Dolly is entertaining and smart but most of all she reminds us of the euphoria of working when its good and why we should take stock to see how we can make it feel better.

Georgina Atwell grew up in a chocolate factory reading books.

She spent eight years at Penguin before being made redundant on maternity leave.

Once she’d recovered from the shock, Georgina built two businesses from her kitchen table that give back to the school libraries, readers, writers and the industry she loves: Toppsta, the UK’s biggest children’s book review platform, and Readerama, a secondhand books marketplace where the profits go back into schools, authors and festivals.

Listen to how she did it. Values-led. Commercially minded. From wrapper to spine.

The Wobbly Middle is a podcast for women rethinking their careers in midlife - that in-between space where you know what you don’t want to go back to, but haven’t quite figured out what’s next.

Meet Bea Searle . After 20 years in the travel industry, Bea wanted to turn her knowledge into something that could earn money without putting her back on the end of a phone fielding questions about which toothbrush to pack. So she built a blog around what she loved doing most - travelling with her kids - and it went wild.

In this episode we talk about what actually happens when you go viral, the insider tips on family bike rides and hut-to-hut hiking in Europe this summer - and what you can do with the knowledge you’ve been sitting on for years.

The Wobbly Middle is a podcast for women rethinking their careers in midlife.

Our new season, The Women Who Bring Us the Sunshine, launches today — and our first guest is Rita King, one of the Legendary Sirens of Weeki Wachee Springs in Florida.

At 18, Rita performed in the famous mermaid shows . Then life took her elsewhere but the water always called to her. So on retirement, she went straight back — and waited four years for a space to open up.

Rita performed well into her 70s and now runs the adult mermaid training camps, where women come from all over the world to get in the water and surprise themselves.

Is there something you’ve always loved that is calling?

Summer is here. The real summer - not the heatwave and hailstorm hullabaloo that was May. And so is Season 4 of The Wobbly Middle.

This season, we’re raising our cocktail umbrellas to the women in midlife who saw gaps that weren’t being filled by the companies trying to flog us products we didn’t want* and instead designed solutions for themselves and other women to make our summers better.

*Nearly seven in ten women aged 45–60 say they feel invisible to the companies whose products they buy. This demographic also drives the majority of UK consumer spending. Do the maths.

Episode one drops Monday 22 June. Link in bio.

Over the summer, as we slow down, dream a little and let ideas percolate — my wish is that you listen to these women’s stories and think: if she did it, so can I.

Last night I went to see Maggie O’Farrell speak at the Sheldonian in Oxford. Her new book, Land, came out on Tuesday and the place was packed.

I’m still turning over the wonderful things she said about the joys of a Carnegie library in her childhood, graphomania, the language of maps — and the language on maps… but she reminded us of what we already know: if we want to do something, we must start.

Swipe to see what she said. 👉
