27 July is World Head and Neck Cancer Day

Head and neck cancers can affect the mouth, throat, voice box, nose and sinuses. Knowing the signs and symptoms could help you or someone you know get the right advice sooner.

If you notice any of the following symptoms that don't go away, it's important to get them checked:

* A mouth ulcer that hasn't healed within three weeks

* A persistent sore throat or hoarse voice

* Difficulty or pain when swallowing

* A lump in the neck

* Red or white patches in the mouth

These symptoms are often caused by something other than cancer, but if they persist, don't ignore them. Speak to your GP practice or dentist.

15 July is Glioblastoma Awareness Day

Glioblastoma is the most common type of high-grade brain tumour in adults. Although it is rare, raising awareness of the signs and symptoms can help people seek medical advice sooner.

Symptoms can vary depending on where the tumour is in the brain, but may include:
• Persistent or worsening headaches
• Seizures
• Changes in vision
• Difficulty with speech or memory
• Weakness or numbness in part of the body
• Changes in personality or behaviour

These symptoms are often caused by conditions other than a brain tumour, but if you experience persistent or unexplained symptoms, it's important to speak to your GP.

Today, we're supporting Glioblastoma Awareness Day to help raise awareness of this aggressive form of brain cancer, while recognising everyone affected, including patients, families, carers and healthcare professionals.

The sunshine is returning... but remember, a little sun exposure is fine. Sunburn is not.

With temperatures set to rise again, it's important to protect your skin whenever you're spending time outdoors.

Sunburn isn't just uncomfortable. It increases your risk of developing skin cancer, including melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer.

Protect your skin by:

+ Using SPF 30+ sunscreen

+ Reapplying it regularly

+ Covering up with clothing, a hat and sunglasses

+ Seeking shade during the hottest part of the day

While you're enjoying the sunshine, remember to check your skin too. If you notice a new mole, or one that's changing in size, shape or colour, contact your GP practice.
