Today’s nourishing plate: black rice 🍚 with a rich meat stew 🥘 and tender aubergine 🍆 : a comforting, wholesome meal for the postpartum period.

After birth, nourishing yourself is just as important as caring for your baby.

Your body needs plenty of protein, iron, energy, and nourishing fats to support recovery and, if breastfeeding, milk production. 🤱💛

🖤 Black rice provides fibre and antioxidants.
🥩 Meat stew offers protein and iron to support your body as it recovers.
🍆 Aubergine adds fibre and plant nutrients, making the meal satisfying and colourful.

Postpartum food doesn't need to be complicated. Sometimes a warm, home-cooked plate is exactly what a new mum needs 😊especially when someone else prepares it for her. 🫶

Black rice magic🌾

Often called “forbidden rice,” black rice naturally contains:

🌿 Antioxidants:especially anthocyanins, which give the rice its deep purple-black colour.

🌾 Fibre:supports healthy digestion and can help with constipation, which is common during pregnancy.
💪 Plant-based nutrients :black rice provides carbohydrates for energy as well as small amounts of protein, iron, and other minerals.

🥗 Whole-grain goodness:c whole grains can help support a balanced pregnancy diet and steadier energy levels.

Have you tried black rice during pregnancy? 🖤🍚

LGBTQ+ discrimination doesn’t stop at the hospital doors; it follows people into the delivery room. Assumptions about who someone’s partner is, what their family looks like, or whether their relationship is “valid” can shape how and whether people get cared for at all.

The data backs this up. In the UK’s largest study of trans and non-binary birth experiences, 28% said they weren’t treated with dignity and respect during labour and birth. Around 30% didn’t access any NHS or private perinatal support at all during their pregnancy, and of those, 80% weren’t confident they could access services if they needed to.

A 2024 study in the journal Birth, alongside an older UK study of le***an mothers, found patterns of direct and indirect homophobia in perinatal care settings: language and signage that assumes one mother and one father, non-birth partners struggling to be recognised as parents, and le***an women reporting hostility or inappropriate care after disclosing their sexuality.

That’s not a hypothetical. That’s people deciding the system felt riskier than going without it which can mean missed checks, untreated complications, and entering labour with no one who knows their history.

There is real progress - NHS England has commissioned research into LGBTQ+ experiences of perinatal care and pockets of genuinely inclusive practice exist. But progress in pockets isn’t safety as standard.

How to be an ally:
* Don’t assume what someone’s family or relationships look like.
* Use language that includes all family structures “partner,” “parents,” not just “husband and wife.”
* Speak up when you hear exclusionary jokes or comments in perinatal health spaces, even when it’s awkward.
* Push for training and policy change where you work/volunteer, not just on Instagram.

Everyone deserves to feel safe, seen, and respected while bringing a child into the world regardless of gender identity or sexuality. That’s not extra. That’s the baseline.
