The right to live one’s beliefs freely and without fear is a cornerstone of a civilised society. The peaceful practice of Falun Gong, rooted in truthfulness, compassion and tolerance, and practiced by millions, deserves not only our respect but our resolute protection.
It is deeply disturbing that Falun Gong practitioners have suffered under the Chinese Communist Party’s apparent sustained and brutal campaign of persecution since 1999. The evidence is harrowing: Imprisonment without cause, torture, and extrajudicial killings; acts which no government should ever condone. The findings of the China Tribunal, chaired by Sir Geoffrey Nice KC, are horrifying. They speak to the alleged scale and inhumanity of forced organ harvesting, something I was protesting about fifteen years ago and is still occurring to this day.
I was shocked to be informed that these acts of repression do not end at China’s borders. Falun Gong practitioners abroad have faced threats, harassment, and intimidation, even here in the United Kingdom. UK citizens have endured bomb and shooting threats at Shen Yun central events, surveillance and malware attacks, and the detention of those returning to China, forced to inform on their own families.
The Unites States Congress and the European Parliament have both taken bold steps. Now is the time for the UK to do the same. Our Government should take a firmer stand through targeted sanctions, law enforcement action, and robust support for freedom of belief.
This is not about politics, it is about humanity. If we stand for peace and justice, we should stand with Falun Gong practitioners, in the UK and across the world. We must reaffirm that compassion and tolerance are not just values to admire, but rights to defend.
