There’s many a time in life, when we might feel as though we have “lost ourselves” somewhere along the line. You may feel things like low mood, anxious, angry, disconnected, lonely, sad or like no one cares. If this is you, you’re not alone. Feeling lost is a very common feeling or sense for many of situations, including after bereavement, separation, retirement. You can even feel loss of self within relationships, day to day hum drum of life or in caring roles. So how do we “find ourselves again”? Well like most things in life that are worth investing our time and energy into, it’s a process. It’s about changing our mindset, setting strong boundaries, making tough choices and taking the decision to make change. I love working in placement with clients who have a wide range of issues and many have these types of feelings to process. It’s rewarding to see such huge transformation in self esteem, confidence and renewed resilience in people over time. When we think about the question Who am I? Take some paper and write down 5-10 positive words that you know about yourself, for example I am strong, I am brave, I am resilient. Take a good look at these words, say them out loud. Keep them by your bedside and read them upon waking. These words are your go to words when you’re feeling that sense of lostness. These words are your anchors and positive thought about self . The more we reinforce positive thought the less likely the unhelpful feelings rise. It not a life changer exercise on its own, but one small thing to think about doing to support our mental health and sense of self worth 🙏. Oh and enjoy this glorious sunshine in moderation while it’s here. When the light hits the back of the retina in the eye, it activates the brain to release serotonin, helping to boost mood and focus. 😊.
