Yesterday was World Blood Donor Day, 14th June

On average, 4,300 blood donations are needed every day in the UK, but in a recent survey, only 7% of adults were regular donors, and less than half of adults have ever given blood. The picture is the same throughout the world.

World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) is celebrated every year to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood.

Men’s Health Week, 8th–14th June

Men’s Health Week aims to champion and highlight men’s health at a time when many men ignore, dismiss, or are worried about keeping an eye on their own health.

Previous themes include issues like stress, keeping an eye on physical and mental health, diseases like diabetes and prostate cancer, and how men’s health might be affected by always having a phone in their pocket.

Diabetes Week, 8th–14th June

Diabetes is a chronic condition causing high blood sugar. Type 1 diabetes is caused by an autoimmune reaction, and is often diagnosed in childhood. Type 2 is the most common, and is often driven by obesity and lifestyle choices. Diabetes can lead to serious health issues, but this can be avoided if it is well managed with monitoring, good diet and medication. You can find out the symptoms at https://www.diabetes.org.uk/about-diabetes/symptoms.

💜Stroke can be devastating, and can happen to anyone, of any age, at any time. The faster you call 999 and get treatment, the better the chances of survival and recovery, so it's vital to know how to spot the signs of a stroke, which you can see here: https://www.stroke.org.uk/stroke/symptoms

Stroke Association is asking everyone to ‘Make May Purple’, so they can fund research and support more people affected by stroke. You can organise a ‘purple event’, or join their ‘31 Minutes in May’ campaign and pledge to exercise for 31 minutes a day.

Dementia is the UK's biggest killer and is caused by different diseases that damage the brain and get worse over time.

Dementia Action Week is an awareness campaign which brings people and organisations together to raise awareness and hope for quicker diagnosis and better treatments in the future. Everyone is encouraged to wear the forget-me-not badge and share the stories that lie behind the flower badge, of lives devastated by dementia. Visit https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/get-involved/dementia-action-week to find out more and get involved.

Mental Health Awareness Week, 11th–17th May

Mental Health Awareness Week is a great opportunity for the whole of the UK to come together to:
🧠Focus on getting good mental health
🧠Tackle stigma
🧠Understand and prioritise our own and others' mental health
🧠Push for government awareness and policy change

This year’s theme is ‘Action’. Raising awareness is vital, but real change comes when we take action too. You can take action yourself! See the many ways you can get involved at https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/our-work/public-engagement/mental-health-awareness-week
