⚠️ Do you have the dreaded "TRACTION BATTERY FAULT" warning on the dash?

🚘 I have had a few people asking to book their Jaguar Ipace in with me to investigate why the traction battery warning is showing on the dash.
I'm always happy to have a look but I always send them to the Jaguar main dealer!

🤔 Why would I send customers to the main dealer when I can fix the problem myself?

📢 Did you know that the Jaguar Ipace has a manufacturers 8 year warranty on the traction battery 😅
Before you get too excited the 8 year warranty just covers any faults within the HV traction battery, so if you have a fault with another system and your Ipace is older than 3 years old then the other system won't be covered.

🚘 I also do light mechanical work on all makes of vehicle, this customer brought their Audi A6 in today as they could hear a grinding noise when braking.

😳 Good job they brought it to me as the inner rear brake pad was worn down to the metal. Because this vehicle has an electric park brake I needed to retract the actuators and put the system into service mode.

🔧 I then replaced the rear brake discs and pads, reset the system and gave back to the customer just in time for the school run!

🔌⚡EV & Hybrid vehicles can be tricky to diagnose but with expert knowledge and the right equipment I can identify the root cause efficiently.

🚘 This Range Rover came in to me because the vehicle would intermittently not run in EV mode and constantly running the engine making it very un economical to run.

🧐 First step was confirming what was happening and when, I carried out basic function tests and found out that there was only heat coming into the cabin when the engine was running. When in EV mode there was only cold air coming through so I suspected an issue with the HV heater.

💻 I plugged in the JLR diagnostic tool and read all the control modules for fault codes, there was one code stored in the HVAC module for HV heater no operation. I then checked the live data and my suspicions were confirmed, the HV heater was permanently locked rendering it useless so a replacement would be required.

🪫🔧 After powering down the HV system and making it safe to work on, I replaced the HV heater and adapted the system.

🚘 This Range Rover Sport SVR had a charging system fault warning come up on the dashboard, the customer had already taken it to a local garage who miss diagnosed and replaced the alternator.

🧐 After plugging in my Dealer level JLR Topix cloud diagnostic laptop, I was able to accurately diagnose a faulty battery monitoring system sensor.

🔋The battery monitoring system (BMS for short) constantly monitors the vehicle's battery state of charge and sends data to the alternator so it can determine how much charge the battery requires. This is a crucial part of the charging system that requires to be calibrated if the vehicle's battery is ever changed.
Once the BMS was replaced, I fully charged the battery and calibrated the BMS system.

🚘 The owner of this BMW 1 series was worried after the NS headlamp stopped working and a warning light came up on the dash for the adaptive headlights.

The first step was carrying out a comprehensive diagnostic scan of all the control modules on the vehicle, I quickly discovered that there was no LIN bus communication to the NS headlamp which was confirmed when I inspected the connector.

As you can see it was full of corrosion with one terminal completely corroded to nothing, which was the LIN bus terminal.
After ordering a replacement harness connector and terminals, this was all fitted and working perfectly again 💡

🚘 This Jaguar F pace had a quiescent current draw which was constantly draining the battery over night, after eliminating other circuits I narrowed it down to the body control module waking up after the vehicle had shut down.
Further diagnosis led to a faulty rain sensor that controls the automatic wipers, how did I accurately pinpoint this fault?

1.) Checked and confirmed all the fused circuits were not drawing any current.

2.) Monitored all the CAN networks with an oscilloscope to confirm that the body control module was waking up.

3.) Analyzed the oscilloscope traces and tested the body control module to further narrow it down to one of the LIN bus circuits which led to the final diagnosis.

🏁 The final diagnosis was the rain sensor fitted to the windscreen, the body control module has 6 separate LIN Bus circuits.
It communicates to the rain sensor via LIN bus so when the rain sensor had gone faulty causing an open circuit and loss of communication to the body control module which it didn't like so it kept on waking the whole car up causing the battery to drain 😊
