A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to nominate us. Everything we do is driven by our commitment to supporting communities across Plymouth, and to see that work recognised in this way means the world to our team.

September is Urological Cancer Awareness Month. This year’s theme is ‘Worth Its Weight In Gold’ – a national awareness campaign to encourage people to check their p*e, understand what’s normal, and feel more comfortable seeking help.

Urological cancers are a group of cancers that start in the urinary system:

bladder cancer
kidney cancer
pe**le cancer
prostate cancer
testicular cancer
upper urinary tract urothelial cancer (UTUC)

Different urological cancers have different symptoms, and many of them are also symptoms of minor infections. Both will benefit from early treatment, so if something’s not right, get it checked out by your GP. Common symptoms include:

🩸Blood in your p*e
😑Pain in your lower tummy or one side of your lower back
🚽Pain or discomfort urinating
🥱Needing to p*e urgently or more often (especially at night)

If you are affected by urological cancer and want to find out what kind of support is out there, type your postcode into the Cancer Care Map homepage. Here are a few highlights:

The Urology Foundation – Charity working to prevent, treat and cure urology conditions. It provides campaigns, research, fundraising, education and treatment to individuals living with urological conditions such as cancer. For more information, the UTI information service and helpline, see the website.

The Bladder Cancer Matters Podcast – Podcast series by the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN) offering interviews on topics of interest to people living with and beyond bladder cancer. Episodes feature interviews with guests who may be people living with bladder cancer, their carers, or medical professionals and researchers.

Orchid - Fighting Male Cancer – Service for people living with or beyond testicular, prostate and pe**le cancer, including loved ones and carers. It offers information and advice online and via its nurse helpline. It also provides counselling and facilitates support groups relating to testicular and pe**le cancer. There is an online support group for those in Scotland, an online group for those anywhere in the UK, and a group specifically for partners/wives of those with these types of cancers.

Kidney Cancer UK’s counselling service offers practical and emotional support to people affected by kidney cancer including carers and close loved ones. Four free one to one sessions are offered, by phone or via Zoom.

Here at the Plymouth Cancer Champions Project are so proud and pleased for Maryam. She is so deserving of the recognition for her incredible work.

Maryam is a finalist in the BBC ‘Make a Difference Awards’ in the active category. This award recognises and celebrates local people who are supporting their community.

What a honour and thank you to the lovely who nominated her.

Our Move to Nurture classes are now back after the summer break. Morning snd afternoon sessions on a Tuesday in Plymouth.

Our Social Prescriber Jo will be holding a drop in at St Budeaux and Barne Barton Wellbeing Hub William Sutton Hubs Plymouth on Tuesday 15th September from 10 - 1. Drop in and see what support we can offer as well as an opportunity to talk to Citizens Advice Plymouth who will be there with Jo.

Our wonderful Cancer Champions are at the Feel Good Friday event at Plymouth arena today. If you haven't already had a chance to get down and speak to them and any of the other amazing health services yet, there's still time! They will be there until 4.

🌊 Rockpool Adventure by the Sea 🦀🐚
Come on down this Sunday 13th from 12:45

No need to book, just come along and join us! This is a lovely opportunity for anyone affected by cancer to get outside, enjoy the fresh sea air, connect with nature, and spend some relaxed time with others. Whether you'd like to explore the rockpools or simply enjoy being by the sea in good company, we'd love to see you there.

The event is fully accessible, with rangers setting up a discovery tank at the top of the steps so everyone can take part and help identify what we find.

If you're planning to head down to the beach, please wear suitable footwear such as wellies or sturdy waterproof shoes.

🎳 This week, one of our Community Cancer Champions organised a morning of bowling for anyone who wanted to come along and join in. The group had a fantastic time, with plenty of strikes, laughter, and friendly competition along the way!

Social activities like these are a great way to meet new people, build connections, and have some fun together.
