This one’s with Dr James Hunt (The Pain Vet) and Hannah Capon, and it’s essential listening whether you’ve got a young dog just starting out with arthritis, or a senior with kidney or liver concerns.

The bit that stopped me in my tracks: the assumption that kidney disease is an automatic “no” to NSAIDs isn’t the full picture. James talks through data on cats with existing kidney disease who were treated with low-dose Metacam — and they actually survived longer than the untreated group. Not what you’d expect. It’s a brilliant reminder that these decisions need nuance, monitoring, and a vet who’ll actually talk it through with you rather than hand you a blanket rule.

I love hearing back from our treatment sessions and don’t often post as they are so very personal and usually we are working through some pretty serious issues. This dog literally was carried into the clinic and walked out after. I often think with how I work being all consent based nothing forced and very much instinctively it doesn’t look like much and then miracle’s may happen. Sometimes the magic is in the movement, sometimes it’s in the release and other times it’s in the relationship, being present and understanding and passing on the observation or restriction found and recognising that more may need to be done with other professionals but always with vet. We may not get everything solved in that appointment but we do get a plan started and hopefully healing pathway to begin.

This has been emotional 🥲 I first introduced the borrowed wheels maybe couple of years ago and he wasn’t mad keen and would avoid as much as possible almost walking longer than get in it. Fast forward and some days he is happy for a 20min walk and others an hour but his pelvic region is most definitely sore so we reintroduced the wheels and I think he is happy 😃 and we explored parts of the woods we haven’t in ages as would be too much for him. For what I thought would be sad for us both with this reducing his freedom has done the exact opposite.

You probably already know this about the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
Bred as a companion breed for British nobility, they've always been a lapdog, not a working or grip breed. Most owners also know their two big health issues: mitral valve disease and Chiari-like malformation/syringomyelia.

But here's what you may not know. In controlled bitework, only dogs bred for grip and hold can sometimes tolerate brief tug loading — and even then, reputable trainers avoid full suspension or spinning. A Cavalier has none of that structural capacity to begin with.

The risks: neurological strain from neck traction, TMJ and tooth damage, shoulder/elbow trauma and rib fracture on landing, cervical strain, and added cardiac stress on a heart already prone to disease.

This isn't scaremongering — it's about matching the game to the dog. A Cavalier's purpose is companionship. Let's keep their play as gentle as that.
