This week is Men’s Mental Health Week, and we’re asking one simple question:
What would you tell your younger self about mental health?

We’re starting with our CEO, Neil Harris who says this:

Believe in yourself, be open about how you’re feeling and don’t worry what other people think.

In the photo below I had just won man of the match and for most people that would be really positive experience… but for me, it wasn’t, it meant I was the centre of attention, and that was always the last thing I wanted because I was shy. I didn’t want everyone looking at me, I didn’t want people’s praise and I didn’t want to be judged – in either a positive or negative way. And that takes me to the topic of mental health, one of the biggest things for us men is we don’t reach out for support because we don’t want to be judged, but the truth is no one is actually judging us because everyone is caught up in their own lives… and it’s taken me years to learn that. It’s taken years for me to be my authentic self and to tell people how I’m feeling… and I encourage everyone to do the same.

What would you tell your younger self?

Volunteering at Sport in Mind can start from ANY age...just ask Raees!

At just 14, Raees began volunteering with Sport in Mind as part of his Duke of Edinburgh Award. What started as a way to complete volunteer hours quickly became something much more meaningful.

“At first, I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but it ended up becoming something I really enjoyed and got a lot out of.”

Raees shared that he was nervous at first, especially speaking to new people because of a slight speech impediment, but the welcoming, supportive environment helped his confidence grow week by week.

During his time volunteering, he’s thrown himself into all sorts of activities:

🏇Supporting our charity stand at the London International Horse Show, speaking to the public and raising awareness

📓Helping with office admin and behind‑the‑scenes organisation

🏸Getting stuck in at Sport in Mind Sports Day, helping run activities and cheering people on

🏃‍♀️‍➡️Encouraging runners and fundraisers at Reading Half Marathon, soaking up the incredible atmosphere

“Volunteering with Sport in Mind has helped me become more confident, responsible and comfortable speaking to new people. I’ve learned a lot about mental health and how important sport and community can be in helping people feel happier and more connected.”

What stands out most for Raees?
The kindness. The support. The feeling of being part of a positive, uplifting community.

“Everyone at Sport in Mind was really welcoming and supportive… I’m really grateful for the opportunities and experiences I’ve had.”

Want to get involved?
Whether you’re 14 or 74, there’s a place for you here.
Volunteering with Sport in Mind is flexible, fun, and genuinely life‑changing for the people we support.

If Raees’ story inspires you, we’d love to welcome you into the team 🩵

All week we’ve been exploring what Taking Action for mental health through movement really looks like.

Laylen’s story is a powerful reminder of just how transformative that action can be. Laylen first came to Sport in Mind a couple of years ago after being referred by a friend.

At the time, his anxiety could make it difficult to leave the house for months at a time.

His story is a reminder that taking action does not always have to mean a huge leap. Sometimes it starts with showing up, joining in and doing the thing that helps you feel alive again.

Sport in Mind and British Triathlon are proud to announce a new national partnership that puts action at the heart of mental health. Together, we’re committed to opening swim, bike, run and triathlon to people experiencing mental health challenges, and to showing the nation what taking action truly looks like.

Sport in Mind and British Triathlon share a belief that movement can be life‑changing. Through this partnership, we will work side by side to create safe, welcoming environments where people can build confidence, feel supported, and experience the joy of being active.

It’s coaches learning how to support someone who’s struggling. It’s volunteers creating spaces where everyone feels they belong. It’s event organisers championing mental health on race day. It’s someone picking up a bike, lacing up their trainers, or stepping into the water for the first time in years and feeling hopeful again.

This , we're showing how we take action for our mental health through movement, and this includes shining a light on some of the brilliant partners we work with.

Sport in Mind's partnership with British Equestrian is rooted in a simple belief: horses and movement can transform lives. By combining Sport in Mind’s mental health expertise with British Equestrian’s reach, knowledge, and passion for equestrian sport, we are creating more supportive, welcoming, and enjoyable opportunities for people experiencing mental health problems to engage with horses.

Horses offer something uniquely impactful: grounding connection, gentle physical activity, confidence‑building routines, and a community where people feel understood. These sessions often become a lifeline, a place to reconnect, rebuild, and rediscover joy.

Together, Sport in Mind and British Equestrian are taking action through a programme of work designed to open the equestrian world to more people who need it most.
