Wave of Light 2026 – Thank You 🕯️💗💙💛

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us at St Wilfrid's Catholic Church Ripon last night for our Wave of Light gathering.

It was lovely to see people come together to remember their much-loved babies and offer comfort and support to one another.

We also thought of those who couldn’t be with us but joined the Wave of Light by lighting candles at home. ❤️

A special thank you to Leti from Hawthorn Soul for coming along and sharing some beautiful words, and to Fr Jonathan and everyone at St Wilfrid’s for their kindness and support in making the evening possible.

We hope the evening brought some comfort to everyone who took part.

This week, our window at Rushton Family Funerals has been filled with pink, blue and yellow hearts, each bearing the name of a much-loved baby who is no longer with us.

Every heart represents a little life, a family and a love that will never be forgotten. ❤️

If you would like us to add your baby’s name to our window display, please feel free to send us a private message. We would be honoured to include them.

Everyone is welcome, and there will be no religious service taking place. Just a peaceful opportunity to come together, reflect and remember.

🚴‍♂️ A very special farewell 🚴‍♀️

For a recent funeral, we were honoured to lead the hearse on its final journey, accompanied by a peloton of around 30 cyclists — a wonderful tribute to someone whose love of cycling was such an important part of their life.

A huge thank you to Moonglu Ripon for helping to organise the ride and bringing everyone together. Your support helped make this a very personal and memorable farewell for the family.

For a recent service, we were honoured to have two speedway bikes on display at the crematorium, celebrating a gentleman whose passion for speedway racing was a huge part of his life.
It’s often the personal touches that make a farewell truly meaningful.

Another kind gift from one of the families we’ve looked after. Thank you so much for your thoughtful gesture ❤️

A Pure Cremation television advert has been BANNED by the ASA for being misleading.
The ASA has banned the Pure Cremation television advert after ruling that it misleadingly implied that their standard plan included an attended funeral service when, in reality, it does not.

The regulator concluded that viewers were likely to believe some form of attended ceremony was included, despite the service being a non-attended Direct Cremation.

As Funeral Directors, this is exactly why transparency matters.
There is absolutely a place for Direct Cremation, and for some families it can be the right choice. However, families deserve clear and honest information so they can make informed decisions. marketing should never leave families with a different impression.

At Rushton Family Funerals, we believe every family should understand exactly what is and isn't included before making any decision. Whether a family chooses a Traditional Funeral, a Simple Funeral, or a Direct Cremation, they should be able to do so with complete confidence and without confusion.

This ruling serves as an important reminder that dignity, transparency and honesty should always come before sales and marketing.

If you ever have questions about the different Funeral options available, please don't rely solely on advertising. Speak to your local Funeral Director, ask questions, visit their premises and make the choice that is right for you and your family.

🎩 Have you ever wondered why Funeral Directors carry a cane?

It’s a question we’re often asked, and the truth is that there isn’t one definitive answer.

Like many funeral traditions, the cane’s origins have become blurred over time, with several explanations passed down through generations.

The most widely accepted theory is that the cane was a symbol of office and authority. In Victorian times, funeral processions often included marshals, pages, mutes and other ceremonial attendants, many of whom carried staffs, wands, or canes as part of their role. These individuals helped guide the procession and were instantly recognisable as those responsible for the funeral.

What we do know is that the cane became an enduring symbol of the profession and remains part of traditional funeral dress to this day.

Whilst modern funerals are a little different from those of Victorian Britain, carrying a cane serves as a reminder of the dignity, respect and heritage of funeral directing.

Some traditions disappear. Others continue to tell a story.

Had you ever wondered why funeral directors carry a cane?
