One of the things I never expected with dementia was fear of water. 💜

Mike had always loved the water. But as his dementia progressed, something that had once been familiar could suddenly frighten him.

Bathing and showering became different. What looked perfectly normal to me didn't necessarily look or feel normal to him anymore.

That's something I wish more caregivers were warned about.

A person with dementia may become afraid of the shower, refuse to step into the tub, become upset when water touches them, or suddenly resist bathing altogether. It isn't always stubbornness. Dementia can change the way the brain processes what they're seeing, hearing and feeling.

Imagine not completely understanding where the water is coming from, why someone is trying to take your clothes off, or why you're being asked to step onto a wet, shiny surface.

That completely changed the way I looked at Mike's fear.

I learned that sometimes caregiving isn't about convincing them there's nothing to be afraid of.

It's about realizing that to them, the fear is real.
