Oral health is a key factor in our general health and wellbeing that moves beyond just the issue of fillings and gum disease. Oral health is linked to a range of other inflammatory conditions in the body, including heart disease.

We know about the gut microbiome but the oral microbiome is as important and nuanced; when in balance we are more likely to have healthy teeth, gums and oral tissues in general. Unfortunately the contemporary western diet of highly processed food, refined sugars and complex carbohydrates all contribute to a disruption in this delicate balance and result in signs of 'dis-ease' in this area.

Before a reliance on dentists, herbal medicine has long been used to help maintain healthy oral tissues, manage acute infections and support the body's natural healing processes. Many herbs such as licorice, clove, calendula and sage contain bioactive plant compounds that confer beneficial actions, such as reducing inflammation, antimicrobial qualities, tissue repair and regeneration, astringent qualities to tone tissues, soothing irritated mucosa and natural breath-freshening benefits.
So consider switching over from harsh traditional mouthwashes which destroy the oral microbiome and consider a herbal mouthwash instead!

The inhalation of smoke from herbs has also traditionally been used for health complaints, specifically lung support. At Wight Herbal Medicine we stock a range of specially crafted blends that can be burnt in a diffuser or smoked in place of to***co.

Discover the significance of smoke cleansing, which aromatic herbs to use, and how to make your own aromatic herb bundle to burn as incense and aromatic smoke.

Had a great time sharing the history of Herbal Medicine in Roman Times at St. St Helens Historical Society Isle of Wight. Later on in the year I will be sharing a more general history of Herbal Medicine at St Helen's Horticultural Society group. In the meantime, watch this space for more planned talks and workshops!

The understandable excitement of the AGM was too much for some, so we didn't get a full house this time. Our attendees that were there for the second half were very attentive to our speaker Lucy Padina of Wight Herbal Medicine. Romans and Their Herbs had many surprises in that we are still using many of the same remedies now as we were 2,000 years ago. Much discussion afterwards, and lots of notes taken. For anyone interested Lucy's website is www.wightherbalmedicine.co.uk

Protein Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) are so commonly prescribed and it is something we see alot in medical herbalism practice as people are keen to come off them but struggle with side effects, specifically rebound effects. As with many other medications that are prescribed, people are typically not informed in advance of potential side effects, dependency and longer term risks. This does not enable people to make an informed decision about how to address health issues they have. Although correlation does not equal causation and there are always many independent variables in research that we need to consider when drawing conclusions, it is important to be aware of potential risks when taking medications long term.

Concern has arisen in the last decade that proton pump inhibitors may be associated with increased dementia risk. In this article, Dr Andrade discusses the evidence.
