Why some of life's most important work happens after retirement.

This VOLUNTEERS' WEEK, let's celebrate the thousands of older volunteers whose generosity, wisdom and experience help communities thrive every day.

Volunteering isn't just about helping a cause. It's about staying connected, finding purpose, building friendships and leaving a lasting mark on the communities we care about.

So, if you're approaching retirement or already enjoying this new chapter, remember: your skills, stories and life experience are valuable. Someone, somewhere, could benefit from what only you can offer.

Because making a difference has no age limit.

As part of Dementia Action Week, today I was honoured to take part in the first Navigating Dementia Conference, hosted by Safer and Supportive Salisbury. Inspiring and thought provoking speakers, including those with lived experience of dementia and caring responsibilities, made it a truly impactful day.

If the idea of going to the gym makes you feel out of place...this is for you.

I hear this so often from the people I work with. That feeling of:
“I’ll look out of place.”
“I don’t know where to start.”
“I’m not fit enough yet.”

But this week, I walked into the gym and was inspired to see it wasn't just full of 20-somethings, but also people in their 60s, 70s and beyond, moving at their own pace, chatting between exercises, quietly building their strength.

No one trying to impress anyone.
No one worrying about how they looked.
Just people taking care of themselves.

And it reminded me of something I see every day as an occupational therapist…

You don’t need to be “fit” to start.
You start so that you can stay strong, steady, and independent.

Because the goal isn’t the gym itself.
It’s:
Being able to get up off the floor
Walking confidently without fear of falling
Keeping up with the people and activities you love

That’s what staying active is really all about 💛

Seating is about so much more than comfort. The right chair can support good sitting posture, enable participation in everyday activities and reduce the risk of falls.
Occupational Therapists have the specialist skills to assess for seating, which meets the needs and goals of service users so, yesterday, I was delighted to attend the Seating Matters Masterclass, to hear more about their innovative products, designed with the user at the centre.
