Lots of new information to get our heads round. But remember for now, nothing has changed. If your child needs support they are still entitled and we can help. If you have questions, please ask.

And there it is…….

And there it is…….

Alternative education is a legal duty.

If your child is of compulsory school age and is not in education due to illness, permanent exclusion, or any other reason (including anxiety, EBSA, or unmet needs), your local authority must act.

Under Section 19 of the Education Act 1996, the local authority has a duty to secure suitable alternative education. An EHCP is NOT required.

➡️ I’ve added a link to IPSEA’s guidance, which also includes a template letter you can use to formally request this from your local authority. You may need to open in a browser though

https://www.ipsea.org.uk/asking-the-local-authority-to-arrange-alternative-education-model-letter-22

I’ve also pinned the DFE guidance on this process on what’s schools and LA should be doing.

You’re not being difficult by asking.
You’re only asking for the law to be followed.

P.S I know it’s really hard to get, but hopefully it will help people to understand their rights x

Good news 🚨 The government seem to be listening, the white paper outlining SEN changes is delayed until next year. We need to keep that pressure up, we need them to see that the current laws are very much needed. Investment and training needs to come first.

A man called us recently to confide that he was concerned about his ex’s new boyfriend who was now living with his child, and had access to them 📱👀

Our call handler explained the Sarah’s Law disclosure scheme in more detail and highlighted how to make an application.

The man, who lives in Peterborough, just wanted to do all he could to make sure his child was safe 🏠 💙 We received 42 applications for info in September – one of the highest monthly level of applications in the past year.

Key facts about Sarah’s Law:

💡It was introduced after pa******le Roy Whiting abducted, assaulted and murdered eight-year-old schoolgirl Sarah Payne 25 years ago. She was taken less than five miles from his home

💡 It allows anyone (not just parents) to apply for disclosure information on behalf of a child to find out if an adult, who has access to that child, poses a risk to them

Please spread the word. Find out more on our dedicated web page: https://orlo.uk/Sarahs-Law_OwOlE
