Who am I?

This has come up so many times in sessions.

And it’s never a small question.

It often sits underneath feelings of being lost, overwhelmed, or just… not quite yourself.

Sometimes it comes after you’ve spent a long time coping, holding things together, or being who others needed you to be.

And when things get quieter, you’re left wondering what’s actually you.

If you’ve been feeling this way, you’re really not alone.

I wasn’t too sure whether to share this, but something in me felt it mattered. Getting an ADHD diagnosis later in life brings up so much, reflection, relief, grief, understanding.

I wanted to speak to the part of me (and maybe you too) that’s still that little girl who was told she was too much or whose mind was always too busy.

Maybe this is for her and for all of us finally starting to understand ourselves a little more kindly. 🧡

Lately, I’ve been seeing lots of people sitting opposite me finding it so uncomfortable to just sit with how they feel. And I get it, we want to move past the discomfort, fix it, or make it make sense but the real growth often happens in the quiet moments we simply let it be.

Feelings are temporary, even the heavy ones.

When we stop running from them, we give them space to move through us.

Sometimes we resist tears, worried we’ll unravel or won’t be able to stop.

But science tells us there’s real healing in our tears. Dr. William Frey, a biochemist, discovered that emotional tears contain stress hormones and natural painkillers, unlike reflex tears (the kind from chopping onions).

Our bodies are literally designed to release emotion through crying.

Crying isn’t breaking down, it’s a way to restore balance, to let go, and to heal.

Feeling like you’re constantly reliving the past isn’t a failure, it’s a sign your nervous system is still trying to protect you by keeping old experiences “open” and unfinished, like loops that never got to close.

When trauma isn’t processed, it can show up as flashbacks, body tension, anxiety and feeling stuck on high alert, even when life around you looks “safe” now.

With gentle, trauma‑informed support, those loops can begin to close so your body learns the difference between back then and right now, and you can live more in the present, not just survive it.
