That's a wrap for now...

All current referrals have now come to an end, and I just wanted to say a heartfelt thank you to every child, family and professional who has trusted and supported NeuroPlay Kids. It has been a privilege to be part of so many journeys.

For now, my focus needs to be on additional caring responsibilities, so emails, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and all other correspondence will not be monitored during this time.

I hope to share an update regarding future referrals in January 2027.

Thank you so much for your kindness, understanding and continued support. It truly means the world.

Thank you too to the amazing Zara at Connections NI who welcomed NeuroPlay and our shared ethos on supporting children's wellbeing 🥰

A little update from NeuroPlay 💙

After a lot of thought, I have had to make the very difficult decision to pause therapeutic work from August 2026 and will not be accepting new referrals for the time being.

Some unexpected personal responsibilities now require more of my time and attention, and this has led me to make a decision that has not come easily. Choosing August allows me the time needed to bring current therapeutic work to a meaningful close and ensure existing commitments are honoured and completed with care.

Thank you to everyone who has trusted and supported NeuroPlay. It has been a real privilege to be part of so many children's journeys and to work alongside their families.

A special thank you to Zara at Connections NI for her support, encouragement and kindness throughout this journey. It has been greatly appreciated.

I hope to review things in January 2027 and will share an update then 💙

There was a time when “going out to play” was simply part of childhood.

After school and at weekends, children would meet up with friends on the street near their homes, explore their neighbourhoods, create games, solve disagreements, take risks, build confidence, and slowly make sense of the world around them. Those everyday moments of free play were doing far more than “keeping children busy”. They were supporting emotional regulation, social connection, problem solving, resilience, body awareness, communication, and a sense of belonging.

Today, many children have far fewer opportunities for this kind of independent outdoor play and in person connection with peers. Research is increasingly showing that this reduction is linked with rising emotional difficulties, anxiety, low mood, loneliness, and reduced social emotional wellbeing in children. Recent UK studies found that children who spend more time playing outdoors tend to have stronger social skills and fewer behavioural and emotional difficulties.

This is not about blaming parents.

The world has changed. Roads are busier, communities can feel less connected, screens compete for attention, and many families no longer feel that outdoor independence is safe or accessible. But it is a reminder that play is not a luxury. It is a nervous system need.

For neurodivergent children especially, unstructured outdoor play can offer opportunities for movement, sensory regulation, autonomy, creativity, coregulation with peers, and freedom from constant demands and performance expectations.

Sometimes the most supportive thing we can offer children is time, space, movement, connection, and permission to simply play.

Sometimes the bravest thing a child can do is show you who they really are.

When a child expresses their needs, they’re not being “too much.”
They’re communicating in the best way they can.

But when their experience is dismissed as “just their perspective,” or labelled “dramatic,” “rude,” or “spoiled,” they learn it’s safer to hide who they are.

So they retreat.
Back into the box.
Back into masking.

In therapeutic play, we do something different.
We honour the child’s experience as real and valid.

We hold space.
We accept.
We stay alongside.

As parents and educators, we can do this too:
✨ Listen to understand, not fix
✨ Get curious about the need underneath
✨ Connect before correcting

Because when a child feels safe to be themselves

They don’t shut down.
They feel safe enough to grow 💛

Sometimes we teach children to be “brave”… when what they really need is permission to feel.

This image says so much.
“I wanted to cry… but I didn’t. I was brave instead.”
And underneath that bravery? Sadness that didn’t get a chance to move.

In NeuroPlay, we understand that tears are not weakness but they are regulation. Crying is the body’s natural way of releasing emotional stress, restoring balance, and helping the nervous system reset. When children hold those feelings in, their bodies often carry the load instead showing up then as anxiety, overwhelm, shutdown, or big behaviours.

✨ Through therapeutic play, we create safe spaces where children can:
🫯 Express feelings without judgment
🫯 Release emotions through play, movement, and creativity
🫯 Build resilience by feeling through, not pushing down

When a child cries, they are not “falling apart”
they are processing, healing, and making sense of their world.

As adults, our role isn’t to stop the tears…
It’s to sit beside them and say:
💛 “It’s okay to feel this. I’m here with you.”

Because true bravery isn’t holding it all in
it’s allowing yourself to feel, and knowing you’re not alone.

In therapeutic play, children don’t always use words to tell us what’s going on inside they show us through play.

What might look like “just playing” is actually a child expressing feelings like fear, anger, sadness or confusion in a way that feels safe and natural to them.

As practitioners, our role isn’t to direct or fix the play, but to:
⚡ Provide a safe, accepting space
⚡ Attune and follow the child’s lead
⚡ Gently reflect and support meaning making

Over time, this helps children feel understood, process difficult experiences, and begin to organise their emotions.

Because sometimes…
“I don’t have the words” becomes
“Here’s my story.” 💛
