We have had the honour of working with businesses across North Yorkshire in a project with the amazing team at Hälsa Wellbeing Ltd. Our small part providing Lifestyle Medicine Health checks in the workplace, the feedback to which has been amazing.

We have worked across various sectors, from hospitality, to healthcare workers, office staff, to production staff. From all walks of life and different knowledge levels on health and wellbeing.

The consistent theme; most people are interested in finding out how their body is performing under the stress and strain of modern living.

Having that insight into what is going on 'under the hood' can focus the mind and bring about positive change. We help to discover the motivation to make those changes and support implementing them. Whether that is continuing on a path of good practice or just changing one or two small things that have been highlighted by the Lifestyle Medicine Assessment. Those informed changes have ripples that can last a lifetime.

We have case studies that show how small changes can affect your body is a short space of time, how the health metrics we check, like cholesterol, or blood pressure, stress, depression or anxiety can move in a positive direction with a little focus.

It seems all the evidence is right. Small changes really do have a big impact.

Pleased to be support Craven College at their wellbeing day for students.

Looking after your health starts young. The more you invest in your wellbeing the better your outcomes in all areas of life. The students all took a very keen interest in the Horizon Health stand. Really encouraging to see so many young people doing activities like dance and drama, going the gym and walking where they can that impact their physical and mental health in such a positive way.

Thanks to all staff who were engaged in the day.

Stress is stressing!

Just thought I would share some interesting facts about age and stress. This is graph representing around 100 patients that I have seen in the last 8 months. I have looked at age ranges 20-29, 30-39 and so on up to 70 years old. Taking the average scores for each age group on Stress, Anxiety and Depression.

What we see is a reflection of what is going on in the world around us. Younger people are experiencing higher levels of stress, anxiety and depression. Why that is? There are a number of factors but would be interested on your thoughts.

Does stress matter? Yes, is the short answer. Short term it is needed to deal with problems that need attention. But long term chronic stress can lead to many health issues. In over 80% of all GP appointments stress is a factor. Long term stress leads to inflammation leading to physical and mental health problems.

What is really interesting is that across all areas of stress, anxiety and depression the scores appear to drop as we age. (apart from stress in your 40's, bit of a blip or perhaps dealing with kids?)

Does stress drop as we age? Or are the coping strategies of younger people leading to higher levels of all aspects of depression, anxiety and stress? If the levels of all three are not addressed then there is a real potential health problem facing us as those younger people get older.

DASS21 is validated and reliable, screening tool for measuring the emotional states of depression, anxiety, and stress. The graph below is a sample of 100 patients who are all in employment living in North Yorkshire. This is not a statistical analysis but a observational comment on what I see daily.

DASS21 is one of the tools we use in the lifestyle medicine health assessment, it was developed by University of Western Australia.
