Back to school means back to homework, laptops and approximately 47 reminders to “please just SIT at the table and get it done.” 🎒✏️😂

And while I’m not here to become the posture police, how your child is set up for homework and screen time can make a difference to how comfortable they feel.

Because balancing on the edge of a dining chair, feet dangling in mid-air and neck craned towards an iPad probably isn’t the ergonomic dream. 😂

Swipe through for a quick physio checklist for setting up their homework space, including where their feet, knees, back, elbows and screen ideally need to be.

But before you start Googling ergonomic chairs and remortgaging the house…

‼️ The most important bit is MOVEMENT. ‼️

There is no magical “perfect posture” that a child needs to hold for hours.

In fact, the best posture is usually the next posture.

Let them wriggle. Let them change position. Get them up regularly. A quick stretch, walk around or completely unnecessary trip to the fridge every 20–30 minutes is probably doing them more good than the fanciest desk chair money can buy. 🏃🏼‍♀️✨

And if your child is regularly complaining of back, neck or joint pain after school, homework or screen time, that’s worth looking into rather than simply putting it down to “bad posture”.

Ever heard of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease? 💖

It’s one of the most common inherited neurological conditions, yet most people have never heard of it. CMT affects the nerves that connect to muscles, often showing up first as high foot arches, frequent tripping, or foot drop.🦶

Physiotherapy can help with strength, balance and confidence in everyday movement.

If you’ve noticed changes in how your child walks or moves, it’s always worth getting checked.💖

We’ve had lots of new faces around here lately, so I thought I should probably introduce myself properly 👋🏼💖

I’m Chloë. Paediatric physio, mum of three and founder of Ribble Valley Children’s Physiotherapy.

I spent 8 years working in the NHS before setting up RVCP. I’d seen first-hand just how brilliant paediatric services can be, but also how difficult it can be for families when they’re worried about their child and find themselves facing long waiting lists, limited appointments or simply not knowing where to turn next.

And when it’s your child, “wait and see” can feel like a VERY long time.

So I wanted to create something different.

A place where families feel listened to. Where appointments aren’t rushed. Where we have time to properly get to know a child, work out what might be holding them back and actually help them move forwards.

Because the reason I do all of this is pretty simple:

I genuinely believe every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full physical potential. 💖

For one child, that might mean helping them learn to roll, sit or take their first steps.

For another, it might be running onto a football pitch again.

And for some of our children, progress might look like holding their head up for a few seconds longer, reaching for a toy or doing something their parents were once told they may never do.

Those moments are exactly why I love what I do.

Since starting RVCP, we’ve grown into a specialist children’s physiotherapy clinic, introduced therapies including DMI and functional e-stim, supported hundreds of children and created online baby development resources so we can help families far beyond the four walls of the clinic.

All while raising three children of my own, so naturally I chose a very relaxing career path. 😂

So whether you’ve followed because you’re worried about your child’s development, you’re already part of the RVCP family, or you just like picking up a few physio tips along the way…

Hello 👋🏼 I’m really glad you’re here. 💖

September is Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month 💖

MD is a group of genetic conditions that cause progressive muscle weakness over time. No two children experience it the same way.

Physiotherapy can play a big role in supporting strength, mobility and quality of life, always tailored to that child, not compared to anyone else’s progress.

If your child has an MD diagnosis and you’d like support, we’re here. ✨

💜 Sometimes the smallest milestone isn’t small at all.

Meet Isaac - one determined little member of our Physio Squad who has SMA Type 1.

When I first met him in June 2025, four-point crawling was simply too much work for his body. He’d already worked out his own clever ways of getting around - because children are brilliant problem-solvers!

So we started building.

Strength. Balance. Transitions. Confidence.

And gradually, four-point became possible.

Then came crawling. 💪

Now we’re working on high kneeling, half kneeling, standing balance and taking steps towards independent walking.

For another child, crawling might be a milestone that happens almost unnoticed.

For Isaac, it represents months of work, practice, adaptation and determination.

And THAT is why we celebrate the “small” wins - because sometimes they’re anything but small. 💜

Swipe through to learn more about SMA, early diagnosis, treatment and the amazing team of professionals who can support children living with it.

💜 This SMA Awareness Month, please save and share this post to help more people understand SMA.

🦴 The cast is off! Hooray! So… why are they STILL limping?! 🤔

You’ve spent weeks counting down to cast-off day, fully expecting your child to bounce out of hospital and get straight back to running, jumping, climbing and generally causing chaos again.

Except… their leg doesn’t always get the memo. 😂

The bone might have healed beautifully, but after several weeks in a cast or boot, the muscles, joints, balance and confidence can take a little longer to catch up.

So if your child is:
🦵 Still limping
🏃 Hesitant to run or jump
🙈 Avoiding things they did before
⚽ Desperate to get back to sport but not quite moving normally
😬 Or suddenly looking at the climbing frame like it’s doubled in height…

Don’t panic!

These are all things we commonly see after a fracture.

I’ve written a new blog all about what happens AFTER the cast comes off - including why children can still limp, how we rebuild strength and confidence, when they might be ready to return to sport and when it might be worth getting a little extra help from a paediatric physio.

Because “the bone has healed” and “I’m back doing everything I love” aren’t always quite the same thing. ❤️

And unfortunately, being able to walk around the house does NOT automatically mean they’re ready for 60 minutes of football… no matter how strongly your child argues otherwise. 😂⚽

👣 Does your child walk on their toes?

Toe walking is something many parents notice, but what does it actually mean? Is it simply a habit, linked to sensory differences, or could there be something more going on?

Our latest blog explores:✨ Why children toe walk✨ When it can be part of typical development✨ Signs that it may be worth seeking advice✨ How paediatric physiotherapy can help✨ Fun ways to support movement at home

Toe walking doesn’t always mean something is wrong but understanding why it’s happening can help you know whether your child would benefit from some extra support 💫

Have you ever heard of a Turtlebrace? 🐢✨

Chances are you probably haven’t, but these things are an absolutely revolutionary piece of kit! 🔥

If your little one toe walks, or you’ve noticed tightness in their calves affecting how they move, this is a tool we sometimes use and one I genuinely don’t think gets talked about enough!

Unlike a traditional plaster cast, a Turtlebrace is moulded to your child’s foot and ankle, then zips on and off. It can be removed if it’s not comfortable, reheated and reapplied, which makes it a much gentler option for children who find casting distressing. And you can also take them off to have a shower!! 🙌 because nobody want a sweaty leg or foot right?! 🤷🏼‍♀️ they can EVEN be used in the pool as they’re fully waterproof 💦

We build up wear time gradually, starting with just a few minutes and working towards longer periods, always alongside stretching and strengthening, never instead of it.

Swipe through to learn how it works, what it’s used for and how it compares to traditional casting.

If you’ve noticed your child toe walking or you’re not sure whether it’s something to be concerned about, please get in touch. No referral needed 💖
