One of the first things I ask in a session is what's gone well since we last met. It's a simple question, but it's a deliberate one.
We're naturally quicker to notice what's gone wrong than what's gone right. It's an old survival instinct, more useful for watching out for danger than for feeling good about an ordinary Tuesday. The psychologist Martin Seligman studied this, and found that simply asking people to notice three good things a day, and think about why they happened, made a real difference to how they felt.
It's a small habit, but it's worth trying. For the next week, take a moment each evening to note three things that went well, and why. I've written more about it on the blog, and I'd love to hear how you get on.
