West London NHS Trust's Football for Wellbeing Hub has received funding from Sport England’s Movement Fund to increase its weekly sessions and introduce employment support for people experiencing mental health difficulties.

Launched in July 2024, the Football for Wellbeing Hub is an innovative community initiative that uses the power of sport and social connection to support mental wellbeing, tackle social isolation and address health inequalities. The project provides a non-clinical model of mental wellbeing support, focusing on prevention and early intervention through community outreach.

Babak Rafiei, Employment Specialist from the Individual Placement and Support service and founder of the Football for Wellbeing Hub said: "We have already seen the difference this project has made to hundreds of people through improved wellbeing, confidence and social connections. Expanding our sessions and introducing employment support will help participants build resilience, achieve their recovery goals and access opportunities that can positively change their lives.”

"Body language is a powerful but often overlooked clinical skill.” – Philip Andoh, Advanced Clinical Practitioner (Mental health) in Liaison Psychiatry in Hammersmith & Fulham, a co-author of the publication that highlights how non-verbal communication, trauma-informed care and Safewards interventions can help healthcare professionals provide safe, compassionate and effective support to people in crisis.

Philip drew on experience gained while working in the West London NHS Trust’s secure services, where he trained and worked as a Safewards Champion. Safewards is an evidence-based framework used in mental health services to reduce conflict and restrictive interventions by promoting positive communication, therapeutic relationships and a safer environment for patients and staff.

Posture, tone of voice and body language can all help to support people experiencing acute psychosis and behavioural distress, according to this publication. Bringing together expertise from mental health, emergency and academic settings, the paper offers practical, evidence-based guidance for frontline healthcare workers.

A pioneering Care Home In-reach Liaison Service (CHILS), supporting care home residents in Ealing is enabling more people to receive care in their usual place of residence, delivering more than £1.2million in savings for the local NHS.

Jackie Jervis, Specialist Nurse Practitioner, said: “We know that people often achieve the best outcomes when they can receive care in familiar surroundings.”

This service was set up to support care home staff caring for residents with dementia and severe mental illness, helping reduce avoidable hospital visits, and speed up residents’ return to care homes after hospital stays and treatment.

Great news for families in Hounslow 🌳

We have teamed up with London Borough of Hounslow Council and Lampton Services to install 14 communication boards across local playgrounds in Hounslow, so that every child can express themselves, make choices and feel included during play.

Communication boards use symbols and words that children can point to, giving those with speech, language and communication needs another way to get their message across. And they are for every child, making our playgrounds more welcoming for all.

Rita Fernandes, parent of service user Asher, shared: "For Asher, communication boards aren't just signs, they're a voice, a choice and a pathway to inclusion. My son Asher is non-speaking and the boards help him express himself, make choices and feel understood in the community."

Visit your local playground in Hounslow and look out for the boards. We would love to hear how they have helped your family, so do take a photo and tag us in your post.💙
