“Just keep swimming! And start nominating.” – Nicky’s call for 2026 West London Excellence Awards nominations.

Last year, Nicky Maund, Head of Family Therapy in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), was recognised for her compassionate and thoughtful leadership, supporting patients, families and staff in her area, at the West London Excellence Awards. Despite the wide breadth of her responsibilities in the role, she maintains a strong, consistent presence, helping those around her grow in confidence while strengthening a quality system of care.

Her passion and commitment to leading one of the largest groups of Family Therapists in Children and Adolescent mental health services (CAMHS), Nicky brought the non-violent resistance (NVR) approach and ways of working into the Trust. NVR is an approach that helps families respond to challenging behaviour with calm and confidence. She also setup an in-house development training programme that brings together parents and clinicians, co-creating opportunities for shared learning and innovation, including the first NVR group for eating disorders.

Nicky, reflecting on winning the award last year said: “Being nominated or receiving an award is a reminder that what we do, for our patients, families and each other, really matters. It can be the difference that makes the difference. So just keep swimming and start nominating!”

Last year, Nidesh Karki, General Practice Team Manager in Hounslow Community Services, stood out as a powerful example of dedication, compassion, and leadership in action at the West London Excellence Awards, as winner of Employee of the Year.

His commitment to improving patient outcomes across the Primary Care Network (PCN) has made a real difference. When the team needed a manager, he stepped forward without hesitation. He took on additional responsibilities with humility and purpose, keeping the team motivated, focused, and confident in delivering high-quality care.

Nidesh, reflecting on winning the award, said: "I wouldn’t have had the chance to feel this excited, if someone hadn’t taken the time to nominate me. Just a few minutes to submit a nomination can have a lasting impact on someone’s confidence and morale. I still think about that evening last year, it’s one of those moments that will always remind me to do better.”

A project to identify and support older vulnerable people at an early stage, has reduced the risk of hospitalisation for an initial group of patients by 13% in just six weeks, through a collaboration between services in Ealing.

Across the borough, organisations including Ealing Council, Ealing Primary Care, London North West Integrated Care Board, and West London NHS Trust, have joined forces to improve support for older people with frailty, provide coordinated support to help them stay well at home. Frailty can affect mobility, confidence and the ability to manage everyday tasks, and it often leads to rising pressure on health and care services.

Dr Nevil Cheesman, Old Age Consultant Psychiatrist from West London NHS Trust, who chairs the Ealing Older People and Frailty Partnership Board said: “By identifying risks earlier and coordinating support across teams, we’re helping people stay stable, independent and well in their own homes. It’s still early days, but the direction of travel is incredibly encouraging.”

Mental health experts supporting people who have long-term conditions in Ealing have helped reduce A&E visits by more than 20%.

The new project at West London NHS Trust has seen clinical health psychologists and therapists work alongside the Trust’s experts in chronic pain, diabetes, respiratory and heart failure so that patients get care that considers both physical and mental health conditions at the same time.

For Simon, 75, the benefits of this integrated psychological support model at West London became clear during his routine cardiology reviews following surgery, when a cardiac nurse recognised signs of emotional distress and referred him to the heart failure psychologist. He said: “I used to feel deeply lonely inside. Caring for my wife with dementia can be incredibly challenging, and going through my own health issues felt isolating. Having someone to talk to make a huge difference.”

Around 982,000 people in the UK are living with dementia, a number set to rise by 2040, yet only two thirds receive a formal diagnosis.

This Dementia Action Week, Jasmine is sharing her story as carer to help South Asian families recognise the early signs.

“I began to notice more changes in her memory, confidence and communication.”

“Cultural and language differences also made traditional memory assessments difficult.”

By sharing her journey, she hopes to support South Asian communities in West London to understand the early signs and seek help.

As part of the Million Acts of Hope campaign, we’re celebrating the everyday kindness shown by our mealtime support volunteers.

For Krishina, these moments of connection are exactly why she volunteers. “Being a lunchtime volunteer is very rewarding. I meet lots of different people, and every day brings something new,” she said. One moment she’ll never forget was when a patient recognised her from years before: “That meant a lot to me… it reminded me how important connection is.”
