Most of you know me for skin health, but what some of you may not know is that gardening is my second passion. The attached photos are of three areas of my garden (before the sun turned the grass to straw!).

I love creating beautiful spaces, nurturing plants and watching them grow. It's something that brings me so much satisfaction and relaxation outside of the clinic.

A beautiful garden doesn't happen overnight. It takes time, consistency and routine. You can't plant a seedling, water it once, then expect it to flourish overnight. It needs regular care, the right nourishment and a lot of patience.

Your skin is no different.

Skincare won't transform your skin overnight, just as one treatment won't undo years of damage. Healthy, resilient skin is built through consistent daily care, professional treatments when needed, and giving your skin time to repair and strengthen itself.

Clients who achieve the best results are those who are consistent with their routine, who trust the process and understand that lasting change doesn't happen overnight.

Whether you're growing a garden or improving your skin, the formula is the same:

Time.
Consistency.
Routine.
Patience.

The results are always worth the wait.

Are you applying enough sunscreen?

One of the biggest reasons sunscreen fails is that too little is applied.

For the face and neck, most adults need approximately two finger lengths of sunscreen per application. Simply dispense a thick layer of product along the full length of your index finger and middle finger. SPF values are determined using sunscreen applied at 2 mg/cm² of skin. The two-finger rule is a practical guide that helps most adults apply approximately this amount to the face and neck.

Applying less than this significantly reduces the protection your skin receives.

If you're spending time outdoors, sunscreen also needs to be reapplied regularly. Reapply every 90 minutes during continuous sun exposure and immediately after swimming, excessive sweating, or towel drying, even if the product is labelled as water-resistant.

Remember, sunscreen is only one part of sun protection. Seeking shade, wearing protective clothing, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat, and avoiding the strongest midday sun all help protect your skin from premature ageing and UV damage.

If you're unsure which sunscreen is right for your skin type, I'm always happy to help.

Did you know that inflammation plays a major role in how our skin ages?

Most people associate ageing with wrinkles and collagen loss, but chronic inflammation quietly drives many of the changes we see in the skin.

Daily exposure to sunlight, pollution, stress and a damaged skin barrier creates ongoing inflammation within the skin. Over time, this accelerates collagen breakdown, reduces elasticity, slows repair and contributes to pigmentation and uneven skin texture.

This is why professional skincare focuses on much more than collagen stimulation. A strong skin barrier, sun protection and carefully selected treatments all work together to keep inflammation under control and support healthier skin over the long term.

The goal isn't to make the skin work harder. The goal is to create an environment where it functions at its best.

Every recommendation is based on improving skin health first because healthier skin always delivers better long-term results.

Should you really wash your face in the morning?

Social media is full of advice telling us to skip our morning cleanse to "protect the skin barrier." But is that actually the best thing for your skin?

The truth is, your skin is still active while you sleep. Oil, sweat, bacteria, dead skin cells and the remnants of your evening skincare don't simply disappear overnight.

The question isn't whether you should cleanse. It's whether you're using the right cleanser for your skin.

I've written a new blog that looks at the science behind morning cleansing, why there's so much conflicting advice online, what I think, and how to decide what's best for your skin.

If you've ever been unsure whether to wash your face first thing in the morning, this is for you.

Have you noticed that I don't share many before-and-after photographs? A few have appeared here and there over the years, but it's never been a big part of how I work.

Before-and-after images have their place and are a useful way to demonstrate the outcome of a treatment. They are simply not the way I built my business.

Over the past twenty years, I've focused on understanding skin, continuing my education and building long-term relationships with my clients. Many of those clients are still with me today.

To me, that reflects trust, consistency and a shared commitment to achieving healthier, youthful skin.

Every treatment I provide is built around careful assessment, evidence-based practice and honest advice. My priority has always been helping my clients achieve healthier skin and equipping them with the knowledge to maintain it, rather than focusing on social media content. That's a philosophy I have no intention of changing.

Professional skincare is about the whole journey, not just a single photograph.

Cooling the skin does more than feel refreshing.

The Fusion Meso Hyaluronic Cryo Mask combines innovative skin-cooling technology with hyaluronic acid to reduce skin temperature by up to 2°C after application.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found within the skin. It attracts and retains water, helping to maintain hydration, improve skin smoothness and reduce the appearance of dehydration lines.

The immediate cooling, soothing, and calming sensation refreshes the skin, reduces redness, heat, and irritation, while the intensive hydration leaves the complexion feeling softer, smoother, and looking more radiant.

Professional skincare delivers more than a temporary glow. It supports healthy skin function with carefully selected, science-backed ingredients.

Feeling Oily? Your Skin Might Actually Be Dehydrated.

Has your skin suddenly looked shinier or felt oilier in this hot weather?

That's not uncommon!

When temperatures rise, your skin naturally produces more sweat, which mixes with the skin's natural oils on the surface. This can leave your skin looking shinier and feeling greasier than usual.

However, what many people don't realise is that hot weather can also dehydrate the skin.

Increased sweating, sun exposure, air conditioning, and spending more time outdoors can all reduce the skin's water content. As a result, your skin may feel oily on the surface whilst actually being dehydrated underneath.

This is often when people reach for stronger cleansers, mattifying products, or decide to change their skincare routine altogether. Unfortunately, stripping away more oil can leave the skin even more dehydrated, further compromising the skin barrier and creating a cycle of imbalance.

If your skin is otherwise looking healthy, comfortable, and free from irritation or breakouts, it probably isn't your skincare products that are the problem. It could simply be your skin responding to the warmer weather, as heat naturally increases sebum (oil) production.

Remember, oily skin and dehydrated skin are not the same thing, and it is entirely possible to experience both at the same time.

If you're unsure whether your skin needs a little extra support during the summer months, I'm always happy to help.

CONFESSION TIME...

I think I might have a problem... 😳

Most people collect shoes and handbags.

I collect skincare devices.

Every time I tell myself, "That's it, I definitely don't need another machine," something shiny, clever, and packed with skin-rejuvenating technology appears and somehow finds its way into The Beauty Bistro.

So... meet the latest addition to the family: the iMedPen® Microneedling System.

Now, before you all start an intervention, this one is actually a very sensible purchase!

Microneedling, which I've performed for many years, is one of the most effective treatments available for improving overall skin quality. By creating thousands of tiny, controlled micro-channels in the skin, it stimulates your body's natural repair response, encouraging the production of fresh collagen and elastin.

The result?

✨ Smoother skin texture
✨ Softer lines and wrinkles
✨ Improved acne scarring
✨ Reduced pore size
✨ Firmer, healthier-looking skin
✨ Better overall skin quality and resilience

The iMedPen® offers exceptional precision, adjustable treatment depths, sterile, single-use cartridges, and advanced backflow-prevention technology, making treatments more comfortable and even more effective.

So yes... I may have a slight addiction to new devices.

But in my defence, if it helps me deliver better results for my clients, surely that's not a problem... right?

Please tell me I'm not the only one who gets excited about new gadgets! 😂

Not all facial redness is rosacea.

It's one of the most common misconceptions I see in the clinic. Whilst rosacea causes redness, not everyone with red or flushed skin has rosacea.

Redness can occur for many reasons, including a weakened skin barrier, dehydration, sensitivity, over-exfoliation, environmental factors, or irritation from skincare products. In these cases, the skin may appear red, feel tight, sensitive, or uncomfortable, but the underlying cause is very different.

Rosacea, on the other hand, is a chronic inflammatory skin condition. Alongside persistent redness, it often presents with frequent flushing, visible thread veins, increased skin sensitivity, burning or stinging sensations, and sometimes acne-like bumps and pustules.

The challenge is that redness and rosacea can look remarkably similar, which is why self-diagnosis often leads to the wrong products being used and, in many cases, makes the problem worse.

Understanding why your skin is red is the key to improving it. By identifying the underlying cause, whether that's inflammation, barrier dysfunction, vascular changes, or environmental triggers, we can create a treatment plan tailored specifically to your skin.

If you've been struggling with redness and aren't sure what's causing it, professional skin analysis can provide the answers and help you achieve a calmer, healthier, more comfortable complexion.

💧 Does drinking more water really hydrate your skin?

While staying hydrated is vitally important for your overall health, drinking more water isn't necessarily the answer to dry, dull or dehydrated skin.

Your skin's hydration depends largely on the health of your skin barrier, the outer layer of skin responsible for retaining moisture and protecting against water loss.

If your barrier is compromised, water escapes from the skin more easily, leaving it feeling tight, dry and uncomfortable, regardless of how much water you drink.
